Plenty of candidates in waiting for seat
Green hasn’t made up mind on race for governor

By Ben Jones and John Dipko
Post-Crescent Madison bureau chief
Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers

MADISON — A growing crop of potential candidates is emerging to take U.S. Rep. Mark Green’s place in Congress if he runs for governor in 2006.

Among them are state lawmakers from Grand Chute, Appleton and Bellevue as well as a former Green Bay mayor.

Green, a Republican from Green Bay first elected to Wisconsin’s 8th District congressional seat in 1998, this week gave his clearest signal yet that he would pursue a gubernatorial bid.

He told state GOP leaders in an e-mail that he was moving toward launching a campaign to oust Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, in the fall 2006 election.

On Thursday, Green said he had not made up his mind.

1. The Democrat lost 5 to 2 last time.
I strongly suspect this is GOP safe seat.

2. Of Course it is a safe seat for the GOP
in the last resdistricting map the GOP and Dems cut a deal to make all the remaining House seats safe for the given party (Wisconsin lost 1 seat) and Barrett agreed to have his seat mapped out of existence.

3. The only reason his predecessor was a Dem...
Was because everybody knew who he was. He was the anchor for WLUK, Green Bay's then-NBC affiliate. However, in 1998 I guess the freepers in the area realized they had actually elected a Democrat two years before and got rid of him in favor of Mark "Bush's Personal Asskisser From Wisconsin" Green.
