Last week, Legislative Democrats introduced Governor Jim Doyle’s comprehensive election reform package that will restore integrity to Wisconsin’s electoral process and maintain our proud tradition of promoting greater participation in our elections.

The package promotes access, accuracy, and accountability in elections. It strengthens the voting process and lends further credibility to future election results. Most importantly, it reforms the state’s election system without restricting access to voting.

The Governor’s plan is in stark contrast to a restrictive photo ID measure being pushed by Republicans. Their bill would disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin citizens without driver’s licenses – primarily seniors, women, minorities, college students, and the disabled. A recent study by UW-Milwaukee found that 23 percent of Wisconsin seniors lack a photo ID.

The only other state in the country with this kind of restriction is South Carolina – a state that barely turned out 50 percent of its voters in the 2004 November election, while Wisconsin turned out 75 percent. On top of this restrictive photo ID bill, Republicans are also considering proposals that would eliminate same-day registration and restrict absentee voting.

Legislative Democrats are currently circulating the Governor’s proposal for co-sponsors. The Democratic proposal increases voter identification requirements at the polls, without disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin citizens like the Republican plan.

Some of the Governor’s election reform proposals include requirements for a post-election review process, mandatory training for poll workers, uniform voter registration cards, additional safeguards to prevent ineligible felons from voting, and municipal election plans with the goal of a 30-minute maximum wait time for voting.

Contact your legislator today, and ask them to co-sponsor Governor Doyle’s election reform package! The deadline for signing on as a cosponsor of the bill is this Friday, June 24 at 5:00 p.m.

Wisconsin’s lawmakers need to hear from the people of Wisconsin that they support the Governor’s plan to reform our electoral process. The package will work to encourage, not discourage, voter participation, while at the same time ensuring the integrity of Wisconsin’s election system.
