43% approve, 48% disapprove http://www.surveyusa.com/50StateGovTrackingJuly2005.htmI thought his popularity was up around 60%.

at the moment
The big fight over the budget hasn't started yet and Doyle can be on the "popular" side of this fight if he handles it right.....
I'll just take a deep breath. Put my head down and go to work.
(full disclosure: Doyle isn't my favorite Democrat but I'll be damned if I'm going to do anything to give the Repubss even the SLIGHTEST GLIMMER OF HOPE that they can win the Governorship back. If you don't like Doyle, fine and dandy, but think how "wonderful" :sarcasm: a Mark Green Governorship would be.)

He's already filed for Congress with the Elections Board.

4. Over the past three months, his numbers have swung wildly |
|
41/49 in May 46/46 in June 43/48 in July
As with everything else in Wisconsin, if you don't like it, wait a few minutes and it will change.

6. We can try and slice this as good news |
|
or at least not horrible, but it is not good numbers and his positive never seems to break 50%.
He did not win with 50% in 02 and I don't think Tommy's brother will be there to siphon off votes from Green (who I think will win the GOP primary) in 06.
The long term prognosis is not all that positive, it will be a real tough race in 06.
Just my thoughts.
In 04 we had a real tight race for Wirch who barley got re-elected and he had won the seat easily before.
The same dynamics could be shaping up state wide.

7. I don't think it's good news |

but it is only a snapshot of the moment, not necessarily of what is to come........essentially Doyle controls his own destiny. How he handles this budget mess will be very telling.

9. Ed took lots of votes away from Doyle also |
|
Ed was very popular with UW students because of the marijuana legalization thing. Those votes aren't going to go to Green or Walker, they'll either go to Doyle, a Green Party candidate, or stay home.

it looks like the Greens will run a candidate for Governor. They're upset about a bunch of Doyle's votes, and really pissed off about the minimum wage preemption bill that Doyle signed.
The problem is, I agree with their feelings, if not their tactics, as do most of the informed Dems I know. Helps explain why Doyle's numbers are so low. I'm going to support Doyle, but I'll be holding my nose when I cast my vote.
Could be a tough race with Doyle catching it from both the right and the left.

With Doyle having his picture taken at coal-fired plant ground breakings, supporting the Arrowhead-Weston transmission line, supporting the so-called Jobs Creation Act, using conservation funds to plug budget holes, etc. he will have a tough time getting environmental endorsements. He promised campaign finance reform, restoring the public intervenor's office, and putting the appointment of the DNR secretary back in the Natural Resources Board's hands. So far not a weak attempt on any of this.
I spent a couple of weeks during his campaign doing door-to-door lit drops and wrote a lot of LTTE supporting him. I wont be doing that again. It will be the first time in many years that I wont be voting a straight democratic ticket unless Doyle performs some environmental miracle.

16. It's really the Republicans in Joint Finance though |
|
Doyle can't put back in what the Republicans in the Legislature take out. If we can take back the State Senate (which is very doable) all of a sudden you'd begin to see some very different budgets, not to mention other bad Republican bills dying in the Senate.

We were hoping Doyle would stand up to the repukes on the UW cuts, vetoing the budget until they made one that restored our funding.

21. I'm an undergrad at UW-Madison too |

and all I'm saying is that a Democratic Senate with Gov. Doyle would be a lot different than the current Republican majority. On the other hand a Gov. Walker with an unchecked Republican majority is going to make the current situation look good by comparison.
Yes, I am disappointed with Doyle too but unless Spencer Black jumps into the primary, the choice for governor will be either Doyle or Green/Walker. And Green/Walker is going to be a lot worse than Doyle.
People sometimes say, "Things were better when Tommy was governor." But again, it comes down to the Legislature. Back when Tommy was governor we had a Democratic legislature instead of a Republican one, and it held him in check somewhat.

23. You're referring to the dministrator put on paid leave, |
|
The Ward Churchill visit, and Stout wanting to get rid of the ROTC, right? UWSP had a similar proposal before Student Government that would have also barred military recruiters as well as the ROTC, however it was narrowly defeated. I was surprised that none of the reich wing radio gasbags in the state didn't pick it up at the time.

11. Low popularity for Doyle.... |
|
...doesn't translate to high popularity for Green or Walker.
I told an associate of mine back home that if Mark Green became governor of Wisconsin, I wasn't going to go back after I get out of the Air Force. I'll either stay in the St. Louis area or move somewhere else entirely. I've had my eye on Washington state for a while. In fact, let me check out their board....

That will most likely be on the November 2006 ballot. This will mobilize the fundies. This will be their trump card. I have a bad feeling about this.

19. Did the GOP get that on the 06 ballot??? |
|
I had not heard that had made the ballot yet. It will energize the GOP base and cause the Democrats and Doyle trouble if it is on the general election ballot.

22. The GOP can put it on whenever they want |
|
It has passed the legislature twice and they can put in on the ballot during either the spring or fall election in 2006.
Wisconsin used to be the kind of state where we could make stuff like this backfire on the Republicans. Maybe it still can be. The spin we need to put on this is not so much the gay rights issue, although that is important too, but that, "The Constitution should only be used to give people rights, not take them away." Then it's not just about allowing same-sex marriages, which many people don't identify with- it's a statement of general principle.
