I've welcomed and cared for over 70 foster children in my community, worked with the birth families to follow a care plan to reunite families and adopted special needs children that had no other home to go to.
Every Wednesday I drive neighbours to and from the local food bank. I teach low literacy moms how to "read" recipes and cook nutritous meals. I donate money to the local poverty coalition whenever I can. I am employed a Family Support Worker and help single moms get access to local resources, help their kids get good health care and offer birth support when needed.
I volunteer whenever I can and it's a value I've instilled in all my children.
Patriotism is another value - being thankful we were born in a free country and knowing the origins of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
I call my local MLA often to advocate for people who have needs that are not being met by Community Services and I sometimes advocate for them in court.
I'm tired...... :hi:

I work in my community every day, have served on many boards, belong to an environmental society, volunteer as a scrutineer in local elections, educate the youth about the dangers of the faux Con scam, shovel my sidewalk so the elderly are safer, ummmm, is that enough or do you want more?

6. It isn't a forum to brag about our volunteer work or charity |
|
Although I am sure most everyone here has contributed to plenty of each - progressives are like that. This is a political forum to discuss ideas. If one finds themselves being marginalized in a political forum, it is probably because they are not addressing a political discussion, at least not seriously.

8. I see no one bragging here |
|
I see people sharing ideas and talking about some of the great organizations out there that perhaps others may want to join . This is how you get people interested in your political views and has much more of an effect then preaching to the converted. . I am a Big Brother ,its a great organization and i was a minor hockey coach until i got fed up with nut job parents

Volunteered on suicide prevention phone lines, served as a Board member on a housing coop (with a 50% disabled population), did volunteer maintenance work, given money to various political causes (nuclear arms, environmental, homeless, etc), donated money to the university that I graduated from, etc.
Believe that if you like - the point is that on the internet anyone can say anything, so it really is the quality of debate that matters. I could have just as easily claimed that I had saved 100 puppies from drowning, and nobody would know for sure.
I am not saying these other things aren't relevant. As long as the other things add to the debate, rather than distract from it, no problem.
As an aside, I think the greatest thing one can do in service to the less fortunate is to pay a reasonable level of taxes and support the principle of progressive taxation. That is what really provides resources to help the less fortunate. People who want to pay low taxes, and make up for it with charity are often deluding themselves.
