Our Afghan legacy: Red tape
Our Afghan legacy: Red tape
`I have to create a bureaucracy'

We may not be warriors of legend. We may not be ingeniously creative. But, by God, there's one thing Canadians do better than most.

And it will be our legacy in Afghanistan.

"I have to create a bureaucracy," says Brig.-Gen. David Fraser.

For all those skeptics and alarmists and pontificating provocateurs who wonder aloud what the hell Canada is doing in Afghanistan, there's your answer. And it should fit quite nicely with the squishy image many Canadians have of both their country and their military.

We come not to kill bad guys — heaven forbid the very descriptor "enemy" be used, given the moral equivocation of apologists even for Al Qaeda mass murderers and the joyless Taliban who imposed a brutal theocracy on this rather practical Islamic land — but, rather, to wrap up a banged-up nation in red tape.
