Top court rejects Conservative merger challenge

The country's top court has refused to hear a challenge by former Tory cabinet minister Sinclair Stevens to the merger of the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives, which resulted in the creation of present-day Conservative Party.

In a decision released Thursday, the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed a request by Mr. Stevens for leave to appeal a lower court ruling in the case. The court gave no reasons for the ruling.

Mr. Kingsley acted just one day after a Progressive Conservative meeting in December, 2003, which saw delegates vote 90 per cent in favour of the pact.

In reaching its decision, the appeal court panel upheld an earlier ruling in which a judge found that Mr. Stevens was correct in arguing that the chief electoral officer should have waited 30 days.

alternative, I suspect there are a fair number of current supporters of the current faux Con party who would support a third alternative.
