U.S. signals 15% duties on hogs from Canada
WINNIPEG - Another trade battle erupted today as the U.S. Commerce Department announced preliminary plans to impose duties of up to 15 per cent on imported live Canadian hogs.

"Over the next six months, this could have a huge impact financially on our industry," said Karl Kynoch, chairman of the Manitoba Pork Council. "It could be $50 million."

But Manitoba Agriculture Minister Rosann Wowchuk said Ottawa should go much further and review its free trade agreement with the U.S.

"I'm going to be in touch with the federal minister to say this trade agreement is inadequate, how do we make improvements to this agreement to ensure that our producers are not always at the short end of the stick?" Wowchuk said.

2. Let's invade Canada!
We'll show those Canadians whose boss. We'll go "hog wild" on their asses.
I can't wait until we get a real President again. I sincerely hope he can undo most of the damage Bush has done to our credibility.
We are now the most hated country on the planet, and it's all due to the moral and mental midget in the White House.

5. Somehow I have the uneasy feeling that Kerry will be
worse for us trade wise. On the other hand, how much worse can it get. USians (governments) will always do what pleases their sponsors and to hell with laws and agreements.

He would want to re-open NAFTA.

I would agree to that with everything negotiated against the WTO rules and that's it.

Each government having the right to legislate for their requirements. This time with no giveaways. Period.

Edited for spelling.

4. What part of America is worth defending?
I understand that US swine factory farms have all kinds of environmental and ethical issues surrounding them...but they also provide a few people with jobs.

What is Homeland Security trying to defend? Investment interests of the few or also jobs of the working class?

It seems to me that in the 'guise' of globalization, American workers lives and dreams are being destroyed with little or no consideration
other than..."well your grandkids will go to schools with higher standards"

Somehow, rather than bursting a bubble, creating a relief valve and slowly, but nonetheless steadily moving toward equity of pay between Malaysians and Americans would be not only kinder but gentler. Causing too many middle aged people to adopt earnings values that provide for little more opportunity than living in cars, shelters, or subsidized housing seems rather brutal.
