OTTAWA -- More than half of Canadians in Western and Atlantic provinces support the Conservative government's intention to scrap the long-gun registry, while more than 50 per cent of people in Ontario and Quebec want the registry to remain intact, a new poll shows.
"If you look at it nationally, it's split down the middle but if you look at it regionally, absolutely not," said John Wright, senior vice-president at Ipsos Reid, which conducted the survey.
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day announced last week the government plans to introduce legislation to scrap the long-gun registry and a one-year amnesty for gun owners who have unregistered weapons and those whose firearms licences have lapsed.
