A refugee agency official in Afghanistan says several thousand Afghan villagers have been forced to flee their homes near a battle zone in the south of the country where U.S.-led troops and Taliban militants have been fighting.
The International Organization for Migration says the exodus represents one of the largest movements of people from a conflict area in Afghanistan since 2001.
Dozens of Taliban insurgents and at least 17 civilians have been killed during several days of fighting between militants and U.S.-led soldiers in the Panjwai district of southern Kandahar.
About 3,000 villagers in neighbouring Zare Dasht district have fled to Kandahar city in case the fighting spills over.
