Man, I felt really bad for Canada today and the strangest thing set it off |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-03-06 10:13 PM by HEyHEY
I was leaving work just as CBC's six o'clock news was on. There's an OLD radio just on the way out of our newsroom. A Stephen Harper clip played on it. I stood there looking at this radio and pictured people huddled around it during the October crisis. And how they'd be listening to clips of Trudeau saying, "just watch me" and so forth. Then I clued in to the fact I was listening to Stephen Harper making an unimpressive, bland, predictable, half-bullshit speech (I believe he even tried to bring in Afghanistan comments). Then I had a quick flash back to my Trudeau thought. Then I got really sad and turned the radio off. As I walked off I thought, "That's one radio that's seen better days." Poor radio, reduced to broadcast one of the biggest douchebags in the history of the nation give an uninspiring comment about how Canada is a target because of our "Society." Trudeau never would have lied to us, he would have flat out said, "It's because we're in Afghanistan. But we're not leaving." (Or whatever he felt the real reason was.)
Man, I wonder if old Pierre is looking down on us and laughing or crying today.

How Pierre would think.
But as someone who went through that time, and avoided mailboxes, I can say that I thought that he was taking the wrong turn. I can't imagine Pierre paddling to Cuba and taking that stand.
It never appeared to me that there was an insurrection. The population was not in a mood to take up arms. It was a made up story. It was, in my opinion, an attempt to support the provincial party or to support something else.
As for scuttlebutt, there was talk of CIA influence in things at the time, but none of that made the news. Of course it was all just here say and nothing came of it.

2. I heard parts of that clip today, and also felt sorry for Canada. |
|
Sitting in Texas, I felt sadness for beautiful Canada. I thought surely they don't have the religious wingnuts to ruin their country that we have in the States. But then I remembered that somebody must have elected that man. Then I remembered that our CIA doesn't particularly stay home and just rig elections here. Then I really felt sorry for our good neighbors who are going to drown with us. The lights of the world are going dark for another thousand years.

I'm a Texan. reprehensor is Albertan.
The first pro-life billboard I ever saw was down near Taber a few years ago. Some of my in-laws are just as redneck, faux Christian as they come. They're everywhere, it seems. And Alberta was definitely in the contingent that helped to elect that asshole.

Pierre could be arrogant, smug and maddeningly intractable....but he was a Canadian first, foremost, and always. If he were around today, I would personally draft him to run for the Liberal leadership. He'd win, and he'd trounce Harper in any debate, anytime, anywhere. Then he'd kick his ass at the polls, all the way back to the National Citizen's Coalition and the "Canada-is-a-European-socialist-welfare-state" lecture circuit.

5. Does he have David Frum working as a speechwriter? |
|
What struck me is that one of the speeches sounded as if it was lifted directly from Bush ie they hate us for our freedoms.:puke:

This key talking point message has been internalized by neoconservatives everywhere. The Alberta-Ontario cabal that now controls Langevin mumbles this stuff in their sleep.

This is insane? Trudeau? October Crisis?
I read it and know what the words mean...but outside of that...not a clue why Trudeau, Harper and the October Crisis manage to make it to the same piece, who knows?
Trudeau's 'Czech Moment' was blatantly political, whereas Harper is the just the guy in charge during an arrest. What Trudeau did was unwarranted and fascistic...whereas Harper, did nothing even close to what Trudeau did.
You found comfort in the Trudeau's unconstitutional actions? Wow...a lot find it to be one of Canada's black days...hardly something to contrast with Harper (unless you want to make Harper look good)...
Weird...

11. Most of us in Canada, including Quebecers agreed with what Trudeau did! |

The separatists of that day (FLQ) were ready to kill anyone and do anything to accomplish their goals. They kidnapped and killed Pierre LaPorte, Quebec's Minister of Labour for God's sake, and kidnapped British Trade Minister James Cross, who was rescued. The Premier of Quebec, Robert Bourassa requested that Trudeau declare the War Measures act. Trudeau complied and the criminals were stopped in their tracks. According to the polls taken at the time, not only the people of Canada, but especially the people of Quebec were in agreement with what Trudeau did.
