Vancouver man dead in Afghanistan, reports friend
VANCOUVER - A Vancouver humanitarian was shot to death in northern Afghanistan early Tuesday.

Mike Frastacky, 55, was killed close to a school he had been building each summer for the past four years, says a close friend.

Mayhew learned of her friend's death via an e-mail sent by the Frastacky family at 8:30 p.m. local time Monday night.

Frastacky, a professional carpenter, was not attached to any non-government organizations and funded his own work, building a school in Nahrin, in the dangerous Baghlan province in northeastern Afghanistan. Nahrin was devastated by an earthquake in March 2002.

1. I guess whoever shot him was thinking, "Hey, I gotta stop this guy!
What if they want to educate girls there or something? In God's name I can't let that happen!"

And then "bang".

Mostly I wonder why we even fuckin' bother...

2. 4 men detained in Afghanistan over killing of B.C. humanitarian
Last Updated: Wednesday, July 26, 2006 | 8:05 AM PT
CBC News

Afghan authorities on Wednesday detained four men for questioning in the killing of a Canadian man in Nahrin and said a full investigation is underway.

Mike Frastacky, an independent aid worker who had built a school in Nahrin in the northeastern Baghlan province, was found dead in a house on Monday.

Authorities said the 56-year-old Vancouver carpenter suffered three bullet wounds. Four people — including a translator, a body guard, an owner of the house and a neighbour — have been detained.

Omar Samad, Afghanistan's ambassador to Canada, speculated that Taliban militants or other extremist groups may be tied to the murder.

"In the past few months, we have had reports of a resurgence of extremist elements like the Taliban and other extremist groups that used to have a foothold in these provinces," he told the Canadian Press. "Now, is this tied to his killing? We don't know, but we will have to find out."
