The Canadian Auto Workers made it official on Wednesday, formally severing ties with the New Democratic Party, as had been promised earlier this year.

The union's delegates voted on the matter at their constitutional convention in Vancouver. The withdrawal of support for the party was first announced by leader Buzz Hargrove in April.

"We've cut the string, and we're moving on," Hargrove said.

Hargrove told delegates that as long as he has member support, the CAW would not be part of a body that doesn't respect one of the largest unions in Canada.
