Canada played an unofficial role on Wednesday brokering negotiations to end a standoff between coalition forces and the Taliban in southern Afghanistan.
About 1,500 Taliban fighters have occupied three different villages while the Afghan national army, police and coalition forces have gathered in the region, CBC correspondent Carolyn Dunn reported from Panjwaii. Two of the Taliban groups have said they are prepared to negotiate an end to the standoff.
"Canada is actively aiding in trying to get the talks going," Dunn reported.
Fighting between the two sides has caused a mass of people to flee in the southern Panjwaii region of the country in recent months.
