CALGARY -- With Conservative Stephen Harper in the prime minister's office and prosperity in the West at record highs, Albertans need to soften their communications strategy and the "words and phrases" used in the continuing fight in Canada for greater provincial rights and de-centralization, former Reform Party leader Preston Manning said Saturday.
Speaking to a crowd of about 400 right-of-centre attendees at the Calgary Congress weekend convention on "Renewing the Federation," Manning suggested the spin being used by those pushing a western conservative agenda needs to change.
"Whatever our renewed national vision may be, we need to communicate and pursue it wisely."
Even though a key speaker at the Citizens Centre for Freedom and Democracy convention will argue Sunday that the threat of separatism is the only lever Alberta has in its push for change in the federal system, Manning appeared to be speaking out against such a provocative strategy especially as it relates to public relations.
