N.S. justice minister wants stronger penalties in cases of police assault
HALIFAX (CP) - Nova Scotia's justice minister is urging the federal government to bring in stiffer penalties for people who assault police and other peace officers.

Murray Scott says the current maximum penalty of five years in prison applies to both assaulting police officers and people in general.

But Scott says police and other peace officers are often put in harm's way in the course of doing their jobs.

He says those additional risks should be recognized by the punishment provided under the Criminal Code.

Just what one would expect. Everyone forgets about the little old ladies.
