Outspoken Parrish doesn't seek approval
Reprimanded by the prime minister for her latest anti-Bush comments, outspoken Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish says she doesn't look for anyone's approval when she speaks out.

"I speak openly and honestly on a wide variety of topics of interest to my constituents and to many other Canadians," the statement read.

The controversy stems from a CP report published on Wednesday, in which Parrish described the newly re-elected U.S. President as a "war-like man." She also said she was "dumbfounded" he had won.

Americans' support for his presidency, she continued, shows they are marching to a completely different drummer than the rest of the international community.

(I love this woman, she doesn't back down at all! This is the third time she has spoken her mind re bush.)

There is a poll on the main page of CTV on her remarks for those who wish to participate:

1. Parrish is an embarrassment to Canadians
and she doesn't represent me. MPs need to use diplomacy. This woman is a loose canon. I don't like Bush either, but there's no need to make relations with the US worse.

2. If you think bush is going to cozy up to Canada, you are badly...
mistaken. She is voicing what Canadians feel, the majority anyway, and we still have free speech in Canada last time I checked! I applaud her and hope she keeps speaking out. Kissing bush's ass will just give us blisters.

The US NEEDS our oil and gas, our economy is booming while theirs is tanking. It is clear that we do not have to kowtow to bush in ANY way.

3. I don't think Bush will to cozy up to Canada
and I don't think that we need to kowtow to Bush and the republicans. That said, I would expect my representative in federal parliament to have a little tact and common sense.

I'm as worried as you are about the direction the USA is taking, but we do not need more spitefulness and petty insults. Take the high road and show by example that we have more class, something Ms. Parrish obviously doesn't have much of.

BTW, my wife (who American and voted for Kerry) are sick and tired of some of the comments we hear from Canadians. Canadians often do not distinguish between Americans who are liberal and those who are conservative and insult Americans in general. Every time I heard a friend or a co-workers make an insulting remarks about Americans, I will continue to call them up on it.

Have a nice weekend!

4. I have always spoken out against stereotyping as well...
you will not find any post of mine that denigrates Americans as a whole but I will continue to denigrate bush and his followers. As for Ms. Parrish, her references, also, have been towards bush and not the American people as a whole.

I will have a great weekend, thanks, and I hope you do as well! We live in a country I am VERY proud of and this weekend I intend to celebrate that fact!

5. I am also glad to live in Canada
but let's not be too smug about it. We have lots of simpletons and rednecks here in Canada as well.

7. Hey Canadian_moderate....

Look at my username.

Now tell me that you still think Ms. Parrish's tame comments are a big whoop-ass deal.

So far, she's the only MP who's actually voicing what a lot of us feel deeply.... and she's saying it a lot more politely than we are!

"A war-like man"?!?!? I'm sure you can find much nastier comments in the public record by ReformConservative MPs. Give me a break!

Remember all the nasty names Nixon called Trudeau? To which PET responded, "I've been called worse names by better people."

"There's no need to make relations with the US worse"?!?!?!?
This kind of simpering defeatist attitude makes me nauseous. "Oh dear, we should be nice to American leaders, because we're so economically dependent on the US" etc. Well it's high time we started getting LESS dependent on them rather than further ingratiating ourselves. We need to engage with the rest of the world even more, broaden our trade and cultural exchange with other countries, that will help us grow more of a backbone so our precious sovereignty is not at the whim of the US.

That won't hurt the US either, so let's get with the programme, it's going to be a long uphill battle, but now is the time to start.

8. How dare that woman
call chimpy "warlike"? How harsh.

I love Caroline Parrish too, and I'm going to write and tell her so. I'm pretty dumbfounded by the whole selection thing myself.

10. That's outspoken?
Bush himself, and the American media, constantly talk about George Bush as a "war president".

You should hear what local politicians here in Texas say about Canada.
