Ottawa — It took a while, but the troubled Chalk River nuclear reactor once again meets safety standards.
Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. says a second cooling pump was hooked up last week to an emergency backup power supply capable of withstanding a severe earthquake.
The research reactor was shut down in November for routine maintenance and was only supposed to be closed for a few days.
But Canada's nuclear safety watchdog refused to let it restart after finding it had been operating for 17 months without either of two pumps connected to emergency power.

If this was so easy to fix, then why didn't AECL do it long ago? Was the whole thing staged as an excuse to fire Keen?
