1. How many listeners, any idea?
About as many as Hymn Sing had when budget cuts forced them off the air, I'll bet.

After 70 years, "the last orchestra of its kind in North America." Sounds like a great run to me.

3. I'm not sure that's a problem, except for those directly affected.
For example, I worked for a major classical music store in Edmonton a number of years ago, and the entire CBC classical music catalogue sold extremely poorly.

I don't know how typical my experience is, but if classical music aficianados can't be bothered--or perhaps, aren't impressed enough?--to support the CBC's output, maybe the money is better spent elsewhere.

Now, having said that, I just woke up to this news on the radio, and it does sound like the orchestra got screwed around with by the CBC before this announcement. In that respect I'm disappointed.

5. They also seem to have fostered a lot of nepotism
One band member interviewed said that it would be difficult for him since his son and wife were also part of the orchestra

6. Three out of 45 does not constitute "a lot" of anything.

And even so, you're assuming the circumstances of their hiring--which isn't surprising.

7. Given the record of the CBC
why wouldn't most people suspect nepotism here as well ?

8. It's the demise of one of the last "radio orchestras" in the world
It's truly the end of a LOOOOONG era.

9. I'm in the business
They weren't all that good and they'd outlived their usefulness many years ago.
