Canada to have Afghan role after 2011: MacKay

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — Canada will continue to play a role in Afghanistan even after the military mission ends in 2011, Defence Minister Peter MacKay said Thursday.

Mr. MacKay made clear the Canadian government will still have some form of presence in Afghanistan.

“We're there in numerous roles. We're there participating in reconstruction and development through CIDA,” he said, referring to the Canadian International Development Agency. “We have diplomats who are working in Kabul. We have a significant number of civilian police trainers and military trainers and there are of course going to be NGOs , so Canada will continue to support the effort to rebuild Afghanistan. But the Prime Minister was crystal clear. He said the mission ends in 2011 and that's consistent with the vote that was taken in Parliament. That's respecting Parliament's voice.”

Most likely, we will have a couple thousand "military trainers" instead of "soldiers" if Harper is still PM. Harper's word means nothing. He showed that eloquently when he ignored his own election law.
