Anybody ever post on here?
Considering the things going on in Canada, the US and the world, this is kind of a dead place.

Lots of 'views', but no discussion, except for recycled old and outdated stuff.

1. Well...kinda slow right now I would imagine....
...post-election lull...

I suspect many may be focussing on the U.S. election. I know I am.

But anyway....hey, how's it going?:hi:

2. Goin' fine with me.
Harper's having a helluva time though!

Deficits looming everywhere, our trade partner in doubt, Afghanistan falling apart, Cons still not doing any better in the polls in spite of the Liberals having no leader at the moment.

:hi:

That's why there are no posts in this forum.

4. LOL, only when something exciting is happening in Canada....
and that hasn't occurred in a LONG time, including the recent election. We are so boring (and I like it that way!) compared to the US right now.

5. I think our economy going down
the toilet is, not exciting, but certainly important.

Ontario just got equalization payments for the first time in history. And yet there's no mention on here of all the changes occurring in Canada.

6. Yes, the economy is on the downturn but not unexpected, imo
given the appalling state of the US economy so, given that, it is not "big news" that would generate a lot of discussion here. I am sure there are much more lively discussions on Canadian news on Canadian forums. Here, I think most of us are focused on the US election, I know I am. Obama getting elected will be a boost to our economy, in the long term, imo.

7. Well Harper and the new US president
- presumably Obama - will have to meet and get along, and Harper is holding a weak hand on the environment, auto plants, running a deficit and so on. All that Conservative ideology near and dear to his heart.

So I thought the Canadian aspect of it might be at least interesting to people here.

8. I think you might see an upswing in posts when Harper and Obama...
meet and the issues surrounding that meeting ie NAFTA, etc. This forum ebbs and flows depending on what is happening. I have no doubt there will be a flurry of activity if something big happens politically.

It just seemed unnaturally quiet in here, and I wondered what was going on. ;)

10. We are too divided for good discussion
This group is populated by Liberal and NDP supporters who do not, and will not, agree on basic political tactics. I think this is why not much dialogue ever happens here, and when it does, it tends to become nasty quite quickly if it goes beyond moaning about Harper. The divisions here reflect the unresolved divisions that exist in real-world Canadian politics.

11. That makes sense.
I had hoped there would be some merger talks after this election, but so far it hasn't even been mentioned.

12. Merger won't happen through talks...
I am convinced that the leadership and activists in neither the Liberal or NDP or Green parties are prepared to do what is needed to make a true merger happen. A negotiated and orderly merger would require compromises, which would require leadership, so forget about it.

What might be viable would be to install a new leader in the Liberal party right now who is dedicated to uniting the centre and centre-left vote, and to defeating the Conservatives in the next election.

Right now, the Bob Rae campaign has the most potential for building a unified approach that would appeal to the more than 6 in 10 Canadian voters at the political center (most Liberal voters) or the center-left (some left-Libs, the NDP, Greens). But I doubt his campaign will want to focus on that aspect of his candidacy.

13. I doubt he's the one
to do it. He's not well liked in Ontario generally after his stint as premier, and the NDP no longer like him because he screwed up Ontario for them.

Plus, he's an easy target for the Conservatives.

14. Because a merger is a terrible terrible idea.
http://www.fairvote.ca/

There is absolutely no reason to homogenize and water down the basics of the other parties just because we all happen to be more or less to the left of harper. It is possible to have a system in which people are represented, far more fairly than they are now, without losing our political diversity which is integral to democracy.

I don't understand why people would work to play in to a system that unfairly represents our citizens. It IS an unfair system, so why encourage that? Reform the system so it is fair and represents the true votes of Canadian citizens from all parties and ideologies.

15. Except PR isn't going to happen
I would not oppose PR, but PR would require a constitutional amendment, so it is not going to happen.

It therefore isn't the solution for the more than 6 in 10 Canadians who vote centre and centre-left who would like to defeat the 4 in 10 conservative voters who win elections in Canada because they are unified.

16. If PR is what they're waiting for
they'll wait forever. Ontario and BC have already rejected it, and I can't see it being anymore popular in other provinces.

So I guess we have years ahead of us of PM Harper in office.

18. tuvor has gently kicked my ass about this

I'm a US Expat turned about to be Canadian citizen in 2009, and I really should be spending most of my DU time here instead of the Dante-esque GD: P.

I'm going rectify that right now as I drink my Tim Hortons double-double and some Timbits Dutchies!:D
