Doofus Duffy puts foot in mouth and gets called on it by press
Duffy says he wanted to draw attention to equalization

HALIFAX -- A combative Mike Duffy says he used racy references to two Atlantic premiers "getting in bed" together to draw attention to the issue of equalization.

The newly minted Tory senator says he wanted to make it clear that P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz should not be allying himself with Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams over the contentious issue.

Duffy got into trouble earlier in the week when he suggested Ghiz may get the "shaft" by getting in bed with Williams, calling the sight of two politicians in bed is "a grotesque scene."

Duffy raised the comments to applause and laughter in his keynote speech, but then took a swipe at reporters who later questioned him about them, saying it was time to move on.

1. Finally
He has put himself into play and doesn't even realise it. He still thinks that he has an unbiased soap box. Well welcome to the world of politics Mr. Duff.

Coalition of unintended consequences

That's had its benefits. In the case of Mike Duffy, it put a merciful end to the longest audition in Canadian history. It ferried Mr. Duffy from an interviewer's stool outside the Commons to a more accommodating perch on the stuffed velvet cushions of appointment paradise, the Red Chamber.

Early on, by the way, Mr. Duffy is showing signs of being Mr. Harper's most inspired choice. His maiden speech (strange) had elements of pornographic fantasy. The scene called up was all about premiers Danny Williams and Robert Ghiz in bed together, with such flourishes as “when one is in bed with Danny Williams, he will come out on top” and “where that will leave PEI in the end.” Is there a cover charge to listen to Senate debates now? Mike Duffy Live takes on a whole new meaning.

But however much Mr. Harper may be gratified to have Mr. Duffy as an apprentice standup comedian turning riffs on Danny Williams and Robert Ghiz sweating under the sheets, it can be as nothing to his satisfaction on hearing Senator Duffy's ardent and blush-free tribute to him.

In a passage of exquisite piety, Mr. Duffy recalled that, in his days as a journalist, he “learned one cannot be a successful leader without sound political judgment and the courage to make tough decisions despite determined opposition.” This was followed by a sublime moment of sycophancy dressing itself up as candour: “I am here to tell honourable Senators today – this is where the hard part begins – Stephen Harper has both that judgment and that courage.”

3. Rex Murphy sure has a way with words, lol...
"In the case of Mike Duffy, it put a merciful end to the longest audition in Canadian history."

Ain't that the truth! There wasn't even an attempt to pretend to be objective on Duffy's part while he was supposedly one of the media.

4. Sometimes Rex Murphy seems like he's auditioning too
But, he did call out Duffy on this one. Jane Taber's take on it was pitiful, though. I think she must want Duffy's spot when he "moves on".

5. Actually Duffy's spot is already filled, by Tom Clark.
They brought him back from Washington and he has a new show called "Power Play" from 5 to 6 each day...in Duffy's time slot.
So far I get the impression he favours the "conservative" slant on things. They had Graham Richardson there to fill in for Duffy when he left for his well-earned senator's job, but I guess they didn't care for Richardson's more balanced reporting. I thought he was alright.

2. Too Hot
In The New digs?

Seems like he is feeling the heat.

'I used the metaphor to grab people's attention': Duffy

P.E.I Senator Mike Duffy told a crowd of supporters on Saturday he used the reference to two Atlantic premiers getting into bed together to draw attention to an issue he feels passionately about.

The new Tory senator said the comment, which was made in his first speech in the Senate on Tuesday and in a speech at a Conservative function last week, was meant to draw attention to the equalization debate and to urge the P.E.I and Newfoundland premiers to debate with the federal government in a more statesmanlike manner.

Boy oh boy. Are his elected reps ever going to give him a raking over. He won't care if he's on the bottom or the top!

6. My blood boils every time I think of all the air time CTV gave Duffy over the years to push the
Conservative agenda and frame issues from the conservative perspective.
