CanWest: Liberals demand to see government books

TORONTO -- In a pre-budget meeting Monday between Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and two senior Liberals, John McCallum and Scott Brison asked the governing Conservatives to open up the nation’s books.

The Liberal finance critic and chairman of the Liberals’ economic advisory committee said they told Mr. Flaherty it is “impossible” to have a constructive discussion on how to address the state of the economy without an update on the state of the country’s finances.

“In order to plan for the future you need to know where you stand today,” Mr. McCallum said after the meeting.

The Liberals also said they want more information on the government’s plans to sell federal assets.
