Crowbar Into The Crack
(Didn't take long)
Alberta likes Supreme Court's health-care ruling
Last updated Jun 9 2005 02:41 PM MDT

EDMONTON – A Supreme Court decision allowing private health care insurance in Quebec "could substantially change the very foundations of medicare as we know it," the president of the Canadian Medical Association said.

And the decision is being praised by Premier Ralph Klein, who said in statement that he supports any changes that gives Canadians more choice in accessing health care services.

Klein has long promised to make radical changes to health care in the province to curb the cost of the system, going so far as to say he would violate the Canada Health Act. However, he hasn't made any concrete changes to the system.

Wonder how NAFTA will work into this?

1. What's good for...

Quebec is surely just as good for the rest of the country. Or are they just a little more equal than the other provinces?

2. The decision was based on the Quebec Charter of Rights
and so is restricted to that province. I am SURE some in Alberta are very pleased as they have been trying to demolish universal healthcare for years even though the vast majority of Canadians support the current system.

It is interesting that a number of Canadians don't seem to know that every province institutes different regulations with regard to the delivery of healthcare in their province and, as long as it doesn't breach the Canada Health Act, they are free to do so. The court decision was based NOT on the Canada Health Act nor the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms but only on the Quebec Charter of Rights and the regulations in Quebec dealing with the delivery of healthcare.

This is certainly a heads-up to the federal government to reduce waiting times, I hope they respond very quickly.
