Kenora eyes joining Manitoba
Kenora eyes joining Manitoba
Last Updated Aug 3 2005 03:24 PM CDT
CBC News
The mayor of Kenora says it may be time to call it quits with Ontario and join up with Manitoba.

A grassroots movement to separate from Ontario has been underway for years, but Mayor Dave Canfield says the recent announcement by Abitibi Consolidated to close a mill in the community may be the last straw.

The pulp and paper company said one of its reasons for closing the mill was high energy costs in Ontario. The closure means as many as 360 jobs will be lost.

Canfield told CBC News things would be different if Kenora was a part of Manitoba.

3. It certainly would be different

Kenora would leave one of the richest provinces (Ontario provides 40% of national GDP) to join one of the poorest (Manitoba provides 21% of the national GDP and Manitoba's GDP per capita is 14% below the national average). They complain they are a forgotten corner of Ontario now, wait until they are a forgotten corner of Manitoba.

4. Not the point at all!....
...Kenora, and the general area around Northern Ontario feel like they're consistently neglected by the provincial goverment in Toronto. Therefore they feel they'd be paid attention to more so, if they joined a smaller province, that's closer geographically. Therefore they want to join Manitoba.

6. I, Don't know?
I think he may have advocated it a long time ago...but I'm not sure. And I know he supported Bill Blakie over Jack Layton for the NDP leadership, so he has a lot of connections to Manitoba. OTOH he's had years of public service to Ontario.

7. I live in Thunder Bay I know what goes on up here
It’s not about attention or geography it’s about money.

We are pissed we don’t get a double lane highway and new health care funding, Atikokan is pissed their coal plant is closing and the tax base is disappearing, and Kenora is pissed their newsprint mill is closing. And everyone is pissed that the forestry industry is taking a dive.

Essentially what the people in Kenora want is for American paper companies to get huge tax breaks for creating jobs in the north. It's never gonna happen not in Ontario and not in Manitoba.

I've looked at this idea; economically it's a stupid one.
