B.C. Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon says he wants to talk to CN in the wake of Monday's freight train derailment along the former B.C. Rail line in the Cheakamus Canyon near Squamish.

Monday's derailment sent a handful of empty lumber cars off the tracks. And CN says there were no injuries and little damage.

Letter suggests CN make changes to weight and length of trains after accident

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Transportation Safety Board has issued a safety advisory for CN Rail trains travelling through the steep and curved area of Squamish after a derailment in August caused significant environmental damage to the Cheakamus River.

Dan Holbrook of the safety board said Tuesday the advisory was issued to Transport Canada and suggests some changes should be made to the way it operates in the Squamish area, about 50 kilometres north of Vancouver.

"They need to evaluate, or take a look at Canadian National's operational review and assess their equipment handling, train length and tonnage instructions," said Holbrook, the board's western regional manager.

Holbrook couldn't say if the purchase and operational change from B.C. Rail to Canadian National has anything to do with spate of accidents.
