Police assumed heart attack victim was homeless, widow says
Last updated Oct 27 2005 07:09 AM EDT
CBC News

A woman whose husband died of a heart attack in front of Toronto Police Headquarters suspects that officers failed to get quick help for him because they thought he was homeless.

Maria Kaastan is appealing an internal police investigation that cleared officers who found Jim Calvert when he collapsed on a bench outside police headquarters last fall.

Calvert, who was walking to a gardening conference at the time, was wearing grubby clothes and pushing a bundle buggy when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

The investigation revealed that Calvert, who was not homeless, still had a pulse when he was noticed by police.

1. I've suspected for some time now that Canadians...
were becoming too much like Americans - I'd like to think this sort of thing is an aberration.

I beg you, Canada, reject American influence in your lives. Most of what we export these days is valueless, even soulless. You folks have enough of our fast-food, our big-box sprawl-marts, our reality TV. Yes, there are other things that make your country unique, but the lines have become blurred in recent years. Please, eat at Harvey's, shop at Canadian Tire, produce more of your own films and TV programs. And for God sakes, elect the people who will keep your social infrastructure in place. When it comes to identity, at least Les Quebecois have their own TV shows, films, music, etc. Yes, I know, they also watch our TV programs and eat at McDo's, but they've established a "distinct" culture, something English-Canadians could do a lot better than they have. Geography dictates that there is always going to be some influence, but you don't have to be the de-facto 51st state!

2. I've been to two coroner's inquests that involved death in custody's
Both times it was something similiar to this... so if it happens that often...why has nothing been done?
