CBC News

Nearly 14,000 Telus employees will remain on the picket line, after members of the Telecommunications Workers Union narrowly rejected a tentative deal with the company.

The union finished tallying the results Sunday night after a week-long ratification vote by its members, who mostly work in Alberta and British Columbia. Of 9,027 votes cast, 50.3 per cent opposed the agreement, the union said.

"A majority of our members have voted to reject the tentative agreement," said union president Bruce Bell. "This was the membership's decision to make.

"We accept their decision and will resume the struggle for an agreement that better addresses their concerns."

Telus picketers out in the cold
Bylaw forbids open fire pit on St. Albert Road

Union officials are calling for a meeting with St. Albert’s mayor, after the city’s fire department refused to grant an exemption Friday allowing picketers to use a burning barrel to stay warm.

The St. Albert Fire Department responded to the picket line at approximately 11 a.m. Friday, after workers in the Telus building located at St. Albert Rd. and St. Anne St. complained about smoke from the burning barrel.

Lloyd Egeto, president of the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) Local 208, said the workers started the fire in a 45-gallon barrel to keep warm.

"We had our burn barrel, like a regular barbecue, and then Telus decides to put their pressure on the city," said Egeto. "We had a fire extinguisher and didn’t see a problem with it, but the fire chief wouldn’t cut us any slack."

3. That's pretty bad-- it does get damn cold. Has Telus no decency?

Never mind. I know the answer.
