"Colditz camps plan for ASBO families"
Entire families would be confined without trial in 'Colditz-style' camps under draconian new laws being drafted as part of Tony Blair's drive to restore 'respect' in British society.

The Mail on Sunday has learned that so-called 'neighbours from hell' will be placed in 'sin bins' policed by private security guards with powers to detain residents and impose curfews.

The Prime Minister is also examining plans to confiscate the homes of parents whose children are accused of persistent anti-social behaviour under the controversial measures proposed by Downing Street 'Respect Tsar' Louise Casey.

Although unelected and unaccountable, Ms Casey has been given a free hand by the Prime Minister to find ways of dealing with problem families who terrorise council estates - and her ideas will cause deep divisions between Ministers.

2. Who knows.
A housing estate like this does exist in Dundee. That's a fact. So it's not unimaginable that they would extend the project to other parts of the country.

3. Downing St deny 'baby Asbos' plan
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4324138.stm

Downing Street has distanced itself from reports ministers are planning to impose anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos) on under-10s.
The Sunday Telegraph said it would be a "lighter sanction" than for older youths and younger children were "unlikely" to be named and shamed.

But a government spokesman said he did not "recognise" such a plan.

Asbos can currently be given only to people over 10, the minimum age of criminal responsibility.

5. BBC link
The BBC have saw fit to point out the Mail's report deep in this article.

The Mail on Sunday reported that possible proposals could include "sin bin" residential units for "neighbours from hell", to be policed by security guards with powers to impose curfews and detain residents.

The paper also suggested the prime minister was looking at plans to confiscate the homes of parents whose children are accused of persistent anti-social behaviour.

Would the BBC point out the Mail's story unless it thought there was some merit to it? Who knows.

6. More meaningless tabloid politics from Blair's government
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 06:19 PM by fedsron2us
If the parents of the offenders live in council or housing association properties then there will be nothing to 'confiscate'. These landlords already have powers to evict tenants who harrass their neighbours so this very much looks like an existing initiative being repackaged and rebranded before being sold back to a gullible media. The notion of punishing parents for the crimes of their children is, of course, contrary to all principles of natural justice. Seizing any property they owned would also probably violate Article 1 of the European Convention of Human Rights. Normally, such actions are only permitted when it can reasonably be supposed that the property was obtained as the results of the profits of crime. These proposals are merely a form of legislative masturbation that does nothing to address the real problem.
