Clarke makes pledge about ID Card data

-snip-
The home secretary, Charles Clarke, will today guarantee that the personal details contained on the national identity card will not go beyond those currently held on passports.

He is to announce that he will write the guarantee into the legislation which passes through its final stages in the Commons today.

Well, that's OK then, we all know we can trust these people.

2. Utterly Irrelevant Mr Clarke
It's not the data that's held on the cards that concerns anyone. It's possible for any agency to get hold of that information in short order if necessary.

The huge problems that I have the the ID cards is that they can be used to track you as you go about your daily business. Most businesses will start requiring ID cards as added proof of ID if you're paying by card, all social services will require an ID card to ensure that you're entitled to use the services.

Every time your ID is verified that event will be logged. That information may only be kept for a short amount of time under existing proposals, but there will surely be a government in the future that will require that these events are used to build a profile on people for some purpose or another. That's the problem with ID cards.

Oh, and if you're a balding brown-eyed man who works in the building trade you're screwed since the optical scans can't deal with brown eyes, nor can the facial recognition scans deal with balding men. And if you work with your hands a lot, there's a chance that your fingerprints will be damaged and unreadable by the scanners. You'll either be constantly accused of having a false ID or you'll be matched to any number of other balding brown-eyed builders in potential criminal investigations.

These ID cards sound better every minute don't they?
