Man charged over hoax Yorkshire Ripper tape

A man has been charged with perverting the course of justice in the Yorkshire Ripper investigation 26 years ago.

John Humble, 49, from Sunderland, has been charged in connection with sending hoax letters and tape.

The hoaxes, in 1978 and 1979, which mocked officers for failing to catch the Yorkshire Ripper, diverted the inquiry to Sunderland, during which time Peter Sutcliffe went on to kill three more times.

The hoaxer became known as Wearside Jack and in one letter he made reference to the killing of Joan Harrison, whose murder has yet to be solved.
