'Home Truths' this morning - "Celebrating John Peel"
It's the one-year anniversary of his death.

This week, Home Truths comes from Peel Acres in Suffolk.

Tom Robinson presents a tribute to John Peel with Sheila and the family, along with your memories of John - and news of the The John Peel train.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hometruths/john_special.shtml

and this week's 'Book of the Week' is

Margrave of the Marshes
By John Peel and Sheila Ravenscroft, abridged by Doreen Estall, read by Michael Angelis.

John Peel's autobiography is read by Michael Angelis. The book, started by John, was completed by Sheila. He describes with characteristic humour his early life, from child to man, including his school days, National Service and his time in the United States. He talks with his usual openness about bullying and beatings at public school, about his joy at discovering Lonnie Donegan and Elvis and about many of the weird and wonderful moments in his broadcasting career. Sheila paints an intimate portrait of the man and his music, the highs and the lows of everyday life at Peel Acres. The completion of this book has been a labour of love for John's family and is a fitting tribute to a hugely inspirational and much missed broadcaster.

9.45-10.00am, repeated 12.30-12.45am weekdays

1. Nice programme!
Loved the bit on the "John Peel Special" train. A reminder of what we lost a year ago...

2. and also next week
on Radio 6

Peeling Back The Years
Mon 24 - Thur 27 October -  2100-2200

The week starts with John's debut BBC radio broadcast, as Pete Drummond's co-presenter on Radio 1's Top Gear programme, back in October 1967. The playlist is typically eclectic, opening with Martha & the Vandellas, and embracing The Hollies, The Bee Gees, The Velvet Underground and session tracks from Pink Floyd along the way.

(...)

Extracts from Peeling Back The Years, provide the opportunity to enjoy John Peel in conversation with his great friend and producer John Walters. Recorded in 1987, the series provides an insight into John Peel the music fan and the DJ.

(...)

The series goes on to explore the British music scene, and John's own impact upon it, from the early 70s, through the punk explosion and into the 80s. The soundtrack to the interviews is provided by some of bands he championed, including The Ramones, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Captain Beefheart, The Undertones and, of course, The Fall (with whom he had an extended love affair).

The archive programming is introduced by 6 Music Presenters Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq who got together, over a mic, to remember their friend and colleague. Both presenters were inspired by the inimitable DJ and music champion, and eventually enjoyed working with him, but when a young Tom Robinson sent a letter to his favourite pirate radio DJ he did not anticipate the lengthy correspondence that followed. These and other personal recollections frame the Peel highlights.

3. I HATE Steve Lamacq (rant warning)
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 02:56 PM by ...of J.Temperance
He's not fit to clean the great man's shoes. I HATE Jo Whiley as well. Lamacq and Whiley are fucking sell-out's and corporate lackies.

Would Lamacq and Whiley play Melt Banana or Ivor Cutler? No, instead they rave about CRAP like Coldplay and Green Day...WOW, we ALL remember HOW MUCH Peel LOVED playing Coldplay and Green Day stuff :sarcasm:

Lamacq has "sessions", fucking copycat. But Lamacq's "sessions" are usually by American wannabe FM garbage like Feeder or Travis...he WOULDN'T have the balls to have sessions from bands like The Imperial Lee County Killers or Solex...NOT that I'd want him to have sessions by bands like that, because I KNOW his HEART wouldn't tell him to, IF he did it'd be because he was trying to be "hip" or his corporate lackies were trying to be "hip".

I remember when Lamacq played his FIRST Mogwai tune...oh this was ONLY about after Mogwai had released their THIRD and WORST LP 'Come On Die Young' and then Lamacq REPEATEDLY played the ONLY track with SINGING in it 'Cody'...oh WHY was THAT? Was it because his pathetic audience WOULDN'T have been able to handle an INSTRUMENTAL track? Aw, what WOULDN'T their short attention spans have been able to handle NO singing? Peel played 'My Father My King' ALL 20 minutes and 12 seconds of it and ALL of it INSTRUMENTAL...Peel played ALL of 'Mogwai Young Team' etc. But Lamacq acted like HE'D DISCOVERED bloody Mogwai YEARS after Peel had ACTUALLY DISCOVERED Mogwai.

I remember, once during Whiley's lunchtime Radio 1 show, a friend of mine called me and said that the annoying asslicker had played 'American Trilogy' by The Delgados and I was VERY UPSET. Whiley doesn't give a shit about The Delgados, she was just trying to be "hip" by playing something "obscure" to her dummy, braindead audience, no doubt she followed playing The Delgados by playing something by McFly or something, who are far more up her street obviously. Stupid witch.

I don't CARE if this is Elitist of me, musically I AM an Elitist and I DON'T care. I don't WANT our bands on bloody daytime and evening mainstream radio, our bands AREN'T for...THEM.

Why can't someone who actually had something in common with Peel, like Andy Kershaw for example co-host with Tom Robinson? Oh I forgot, Kershaw was blackballed by the BBC wasn't he...silly me for not remembering.

End of rant. But you know, SOMETIMES you HAVE to rant about something that pisses you off like Lamacq and Whiley piss me off.
