Gay unions about to increase in Scotland and the UK
we might be crusty gits at least we are reasonably civilised.

<snip>

Members of an Executive-appointed working group last year backed legislation that would make crime based on hatred of homosexuals a special offence, allowing judges to impose harsher penalties.

They also encouraged ministers to look at creating a new offence to combat “harassment and alarming or distressing behaviour”, another recommendation the Executive has yet to back.

But the civil partnership legislation is the latest initiative introduced by the UK government to further the cause of gay rights. Since 1997, Westminster has backed measures that include an equal age of consent and reform of sexual offences legislation.

MSPs voted in June 2000 to scrap Section 28, the “clause” that banned the promotion of homosexuality in schools, as well as a raft of measures that recognised same-sex couples in areas such as housing and mental health.

6. "The Civil Partnership Act 2004 received Royal Assent on 18 November 2004.
The first registrations will not take place until at least next autumn (2005). The delay is due to the necessity to make extensive amendments to the tax and benefits systems as well as training for registrars."
