'Remains found on Saddleworth Moor'

Police have refused to comment on a report that human remains have been found on Saddleworth Moor.

Greater Manchester officers have been actively searching for the body of Moors Murders victim Keith Bennett for the past three years.

The force referred callers to neighbouring West Yorkshire police, who declined to comment on a Sky News report that remains had been found. Police sources said later the discovery was not thought to be connected to the Moors murders.

West Yorkshire police said they were called around 1pm to reports of remains found at Wessenden Head Road on Saddleworth Moor, near Huddersfield.

1. Brady's lawyer:

Ian Brady's lawyer, Giovanni Di Stefano, made the extraordinary claim that a body had been found by private investigators following directions given by Brady.

He said: "A forensic archaeologist is at the site and is examining the remains. We should not say anything else until all checks have been completed.

"This dig was the combined efforts of several people including a doctor who I will not name and who has been providing me with a daily update of events at the site.

"These excavations are the culmination of nine months work and the combined efforts of several people and we have been led to this place by Ian Brady."
