No use trying to sleep, I fear.

And it'll be a nice change having something to root for ...

1. Oh yes
coffee will be at hand. I hope DU will be able to take the strain.

My excitement for Tuesday is akin to what I felt in anticipation for 1 May 1997. Although hopefully Obama won't turn out to be a huge disappointment like what New Labour did.

6. I'm not looking forward to the first disappointment
DU is so bipolar about politicians: it ratchets a candidate up to superhero status, only to turn him or her into a supervillain almost overnight. Kerry and Pelosi spring to mind. Expectations are so high for Obama that if he fails to turn water into wine by the end of January, it'll be a let-down. There will inevitably be compromises, disappointments, centrist policies, and I hope DUers won't go totally negative.

8. I've noticed that
whenever say a previously-lauded Democratic Senator doesn't vote with DU consensus on an individual bill they are labelled as "Bush-enablers" and a DINO.

2. I doubt that I will
I'm afraid I'm going to need a good nights sleep tonight. :hangover:

FWIW, I've already noticed a marked increase in Obama-related activities on Facebook today. All the best wishes to our friends across the pond!

3. Yeah, I'll be here
If the site isn't overloaded, anyway.

I'm intrigued by this on Radio 4 tonight:

"23:00
Tina C's Election Night BBQ

Country singer and presidential hopeful Tina C, the comic creation of Christopher Green, assesses her chances of becoming president, does an in-depth interview with Martha Kearney, gets calls from Sarah Palin and Barack Obama and awaits the results."

More hoax phone calls? Or would the BBC have to come clean about them beforehand, in the febrile Blue Peter/BrandRoss era?

4. Not me
I used to, but I was cured of that in 2000. Stayed up until it was called for Gore, went to bed happy, woke up to... you know what. That and my growing distaste for TV talking heads mean I'll be going to bed as normal tonight, though I'll admit I might find it hard to get to sleep...

7. wow, that happened to me too
In 2000 I went to bed happy after they called Florida for Gore. When I woke up I saw Bush giving what was pretty much a victory speech.

5. I'll be here all right
Probably not *all* night - I have to work tomorrow - but I will doubtless go to bed late and wake up early. And I hope it's to a happy result.

I agree with AS about not wanting this to be ultimately a repeat of the Blair disappointment - but even if it is, anything would be mcuh better than another triumph of the Far Right. And especially better than having Palin one elderly heartbeat away from the Presidency - and it's not even just McCain's age; I think a few of her base could be just crazy enough to take steps to ensure that God's Representative on Earth becomes President.

9. I'm staying up
until they call Virginia for Obama, at which point it's game over, i.e. just after midnight.
