In the tradition of Mark Twain, Ken Kesey(RIP), Jim Hightower, and Ed Schultz, with some Paul Watson, Noam Chomsky and Robert Scheer thrown in for good intellectual and environmental measure.

Confusing enough for ya?

;)

ON EDIT: You said U.K. DUers...oooops...my bad...:spank:

2. Attempted non-ideological
I honestly try to approach any issue from a non-ideological stance. Having studied ideology at university it is apparent to me that pretty much every ideology has somthing of use to offer; and that in attempting to acces that which is useful from across the board, one can build and move beyond any single ideology (he says trying desperately not to sound like a 'Third Way' type).

5. Surely that in itself is an ideology?

I can see it could make perfect sense to claim to not adhere to any of the off-the-peg ideologies listed, but I don't see how you can claim not to have an ideology full stop - isn't "ideology" just another word for "principles"?

9. It depends...
On the definition of terms (is as always the case in philosophical discussions).

I wouldn't be so bold as to claim not to have an ideology, but if asked to state my ideology would state that I have a conscious attempt to avoid ideological constrictions (things become a tad paradoxical if one insists on non-ideology being an ideology).

6. Can someone please eplain

The difference between "democratic socialist" and "social democrat", please? Is it that the former is "socialist as in far left, with the proviso that you believe in democracy rather than supporting totalitarian communist government" and the latter is "centre left, what Tony Blair claims to be", or am I wrong about that?

8. The distinction is simply an economic one...
since Social Democracy (in the modern sense) grew out of the Democratic Socialist tradition. Here is the main distinction:

Democratic Socialists believe in public ownership of major industries and that the economy gradually reform itself (with government direction) towards a true collectivised "socialist economy", with all output owned by the worker - and thus ending class distinction.

Social Democrats believe in keeping the basic capitalist idea, but to tinker with the way capitalism operates (progressive taxation, moderate income redistribution) in order to achieve "socialist outcomes" (e.g. social justice). Social Democrats do also support the notion of individuality within the state much more than Democratic Socialists.

Modern Social Democracy would be considered typically Centre-left; whether Democratic Socialism would be "far left" is up to interpretation.

7. Democratic Socialist.
NOT social democrat. (Judean People's Front, innit?)

Genuine social justice cannot occur without the intervention of the people in certain areas of the economy; however, that change must have a mandate.

I'm afraid that I find left, right and especially "third way" to be all pretty bad.
