Anyone want to talk football??
OK, I'm not actually a Brit I'm a russkie American, but I use the word "football" in its correct meaning...not that weird game with the helmets and gridiron. Football as in Old Trafford and Highbury.
Anyways, if anyone has any football news, comments, anecdotes, all are welcome here. Please note I am a Manchester United fan. If that offends anybody, get over it because we WILL win the Premiership this year (even though we might need a miracle.) However, fans of all clubs are allowed here.
Anyways, forum open...and I apologize if this topic is unsuitable for a political forum!

2. I'm not a great fan, but I'll get you started
I presume you keep up with football news on the Internet - so you should have heard that your 'miracle' for this year may be Wayne Rooney, signed for a rumoured £25 million from Everton yesterday. I think Man Utd do need a bit of a boost for goal scoring, so if he's happy with the move, maybe it'll do the trick.

Weirder are the rumours that the England rugby union manager, Clive Woodward, is taking the qualifications for football coaching, and is contemplating becoming a football manager. He did guide England to winning the Rugby World Cup, but they then started losing after the 2 best players dropped out of the squad, so I'm not convinced that he's a magical motivator of any sportsman. He was just a good rugby coach - and the fact he played it for England himself, and then became a coach who developed a far more attacking style than other British coaches, means to me that he knew what he was talking about in rugby. In football, he's just a keen fan. A stupid move, if it turns out to be true, I think.

I'm sure Thankfully_in_Britain will be along soon to regale you with stories of his beloved Sheffield Wednesday ... ;-)

3. Wednesday shall return!
:-)

That said, I'm none too keen on the idea that what used to be the old division 3 is now the new division 1. We have a "premier league" a "championship" and then it's what's left of the old football league.

And I don't think I'm the only one who's a little bemused by the sackings at Southampton and Newcastle.

4. And to tie this all up nicely:
England coach Sir Clive Woodward has confirmed that he will resign his post on Wednesday.

Woodward left a Twickenham meeting with Rugby Football Union chief executive Francis Baron, saying: "I will be handing in my resignation."

The 48-year-old has been linked with an unlikely move to Premiership football club Southampton.

13. And to cap all that
Paul Sturrock is the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_wed/3675634.stm

Now the question is, do I go to the game against MK Dons on Saturday? I'm actually of the view that we shouldn't have been so trigger happy in sacking Chris Turner but there ya go!

14. He is a great choice
I believe that Wednesday will be promoted this year ( Luton must be gnashing their livers at the thought of their old nemises back their division ). They may not go up as champions but I have a feeling tha their will be a Shefield Derby in the Championship next season.

Sacking Paul Sturrock was one of the most stupid things that Southampton could have done.

5. You will need a miracle to win the title

Arsenal are already seven points clear and they look as strong as they were last season. Man Utd need more than wonder kid Wayne Rooney if they are going to mount a decent challenge. Without David Beckham their midfield lacks width and their defence looks less than impregnable. At least you won't have to worry about Newcastle. They are surely relegation material after their shameful dismissal of manager, Sir Bobby Robson. At 71 Robson may have been overdue for retirement but that it no excuse for the loathsome Newcastle player who is rumoured to have accused him of being senile. It may come as surprise to this young cretin but if he lives long enough then he will also grow old. One thing is certain he is unlikely to have football career anywhere near as illustrious as Robson's. It included the FA Cup: 1978; Texaco Cup: 1973; Spanish FA Cup: 1997; Dutch Championship: 1992, 1991; Portuguese Championship: 1996, 1995; Portuguese FA Cup: 1994; UEFA Cup: 1981; European Cup Winners' Cup: 1997 and leading England to the World Cup semi finals in 1990.

In English football the only people more stupid than the players are the Directors. And the only people more dumb than the Directors are the fans.

The social awareness of the average soccer professional is not high, I suspect.

9. mwahaha
That saying the NOT Glasgow Ranger's bound Grahame Souness has built a fairly decent team at Blackburn. Last terms injuries meant that he did not get the best out of that team.

10. Not Rangers bound indeed
Apparently it's Newcastle. Make of that what you will.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/3630952.stm

Graeme Souness has quit as Blackburn manager to take over at Newcastle, BBC Sport can confirm.
Blackburn have revealed Souness has left the club and that he has agreed terms to succeed Sir Bobby Robson.

Newcastle had targeted Birmingham's Steve Bruce and Aston Villa manager David O'Leary.

Souness will take charge on Monday 13 September, after Newcastle's game against Blackburn on Saturday, although he leaves Ewood Park immediately.

11. Souness has always been a bit of a hard man.
It will not be long before the malcontents in the Newcastle changing room are wishing that they had not undermined Robson.

at the weekend! Woohoo! In your FACE, Bolton!

The victory was marred only slightly for me by the fact that bloody Baggies fans blocked the road I was on in West Bromwich, and it took me ages to get home.

Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 05:20 AM by Thankfully_in_Britai
One can only live in hope. :eyes: I just hope Southampton let us have loan sensation Kenwyn Jones back!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_2/4168055.stm

Besides that, Abramovitch's millions have helped Chelsea to what looks like an unassailable lead in the premiership, the whole world is becoming bored of Fergie & Wenger's bitching, Robbie Savage has moved to Blackburn (why?) and the real suprise this season has been how good Everton have been.

And well done to non-league Exeter for holding Man U to a goalless draw at Old Trafford and getting a televised replay in which they were actually not that bad.
