Never seen Blair's rottweiler John Reid more on the defensive ...
... than he was in trying to defend Bushco's decision to keep US troops out of London on BBC Breakfast TV this morning.

Falling over himself to defend Bush and to emphasise that it was a short term measure which he'd been assured would be reviewed shortly, but obviously very, very embarrassed and angered by the whole thing.

Good.

1. Yes, I thought the same thing
It serves nothing but to unnecessarily scare the crap out of people.

5. They're always good for light relief
but I'm impressed with TheFlipSide's formatting of BBC side boxes in a discussion forum.

I thought I could hear Reid's teeth grinding, as he thought "stupid bloody Americans, what the fuck did they issue that order for? Now I have to sit here and cover their arses so they don't look like wusses" (is 'wuss' authentically Glaswegian?)

The very last bit of the Today programme was the American charge d'affaires (no ambassador yet, though I bet they did wish they had a used car salesman to talk their way out of this one), whose excuse boiled down to "the US Navy had already said their personnel could go back to London, so it's not that bad".

... from the American air bases as we speak, Mu.

However, no damage-limitation or "Having a Swell Time in London, Wish You Were Here" photo opportunities will erase the initial impact of Dubya ordering the guys to stay in the bunker and read "My Little Goat" until the London Bobbies had rid the streets of turbanned ruffians.

Bring 'Em On ... er, not yet, we haven't quite got the security hatches battened down ....

As they say on Sterling Times, "You Couldn't Make It Up!"

7. Anyone here ever been to Mildenhall?
It's a funny place, kind of a little America in the sticks of East Anglia. They even use US Dollars over British pounds there! I went there for a weekend when I was in the Scouts.

I am very disappointed with them as they could actually do some good if they came to the Capital.
