2. I think it may be a first.
I've never had a thread locked before, as far as I can remember.

3. Were you discussing the authenticity of the "attack" yesterday?
Or, whether an innocent man might have been gunned down on a tube train by overstressed officers?

Seems those subjects may be off-limits. Am I right about this?

4. I think we're on a loser, here Mr. C.
The plan obviously is to wind everyone up. I'm not playing.

5. Those subjects are not off limits here.

The thread was locked because it had been overtaken by exchanges between members that violated all kinds of rules on posting civility and content.

Hope there are no hard feelings on the lock - there just wasn't any saving that thread. I would have tried if it seemed possible, I promise.

I think we've solved the problem now. Please do send me a PM should you have questions or complaints.

Thanks!
Shari

6. Actually, Ms Shari, the posts
seemed like something we see on US DU threads - visitor from that "other" place , and actually sounded full of bigotry - hated to see the thread closed - and wondering if just the off the wall comments could have been deleted.

Nevertheless, the comments didn't belong here or anywhere, although I've seen them posted other places too - trying to inject Israel/Palestine politics and bigotry into the discourse.

7. I think we are in agreement here

And it should be clear that we tried to keep the thread open, dealing with alerts as they came in, but the discussion was only growing more heated, the attacks more pointed. Locking a thread is not the last resort action for moderators (the thread could have been removed altogether, but I did not want to see that happen).

Sometimes, all that can be done is to lock a thread that has lost its focus on the original topic and encourage a new one to be opened. Please understand that the last thing moderators intend to do is punish a group of DUers who are posting respectfully for the disrespectful posts of a very few. The lock was not intended to stifle discussion at all.

Keep in mind that there also may be actions taken in private, either by PM or other administrative functions, to resolve problems as they arise. I understand your sentiment about the thread, and hope that the new thread will continue to grow and provide a platform for discussion on critical events of today.

On edit:

Please send me a PM if you have further questions. Discussing a locked thread or deleted post in the forums usually gets another thread locked or post deleted, and none of us wants that!

9. I hope you don't think
I started this thread as a backhanded way of having a dig at you for locking the other thread. FWIW if I were a mod I'd have locked it even quicker than you did. Carry on with all the good work.

10. Nope!
That edit was as much for other viewers as for you. I didn't think you were out of line. I'm just trying to keep things level around here. It's been a tough morning in this little corner of the DU community!

8. No, not in the U.K. forum
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 09:20 AM by Anarcho-Socialist
I think we've always been pretty insulated than the normal crap that goes down in GD and LBN. Although as threads are created here they appear on the main forum page for a time and there's always a chance that someone will come in here to cause trouble, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

I think one person in question had what might be called a "conspiracy theory" and it put the backs up of people here. Since the more wilder speculations are held in less regard here than in the main forums.

I didn't post in that thread myself because other DUers had already said what was needed to be said.

12. ROFL!

That is, as you said, in debatable taste, but still hilarious, and probably a good look for anyone needing a stress release this morning.

I'm good if this thread turns into a place to blow off steam, if needed. Post away, just keep it clean, new friends! And don't mind if I join in a bit every now and then. I kind of like it in here!

:spray:

You had to wait until I got to work to post that, didn't you?

As someone who is married to an Arab who couldn't pass for hispanic or any other race/nationality if he tried, he so fits the stereotypical "look" of those suspicious Middle Easterners (sarcasm, of course), I want to know where I can order ten of these bags!

Actually I might have to invest given that I'm just "swarthy" enough to catch the attention of the local mouthbreathers from time to time...
