1. Okay, I'm an American, but I felt the need to chime in... |

I am fucking shit scared because right now the world is a highly hostile, hateful and volatile place to be and George "that son of a bush" Bush is in charge of the country where I live. We are not going in the right direction in any way and there seems to be no end in sight to the terrorism. The Republicans keep telling us we are "safer" because Bush is president, but NO ONE is safer since he became president. It's a full fledged shit storm and I feel like hiding under a rock. I can't peek just yet. I don't want to see any more bloodshed.

"We're not afraid" was, to be honest, pretty pathetic. The whole obsession with "terrorism" being about "fear" is nonsense. It's guerilla tactics, used by a smaller group to fight a larger enemy. Whether Joe Schmo is afraid or not doesn't really matter to "Achmed Terrorist."
The collective goal, and the mindset that fuels it, is that the ends justify the means. They will lash out at anything they can, the reason being, to get the nation to withdraw. Or maybe even a more primal form of retribution, "Our innocent civilians are dying, now yours are too."
My take on it.
We're Not Afraid - Useless endeavor based on egocentrism, and a belief in the bullshit being spewed by the propaganda networks.
I'm Fucking Terrified - Bunch of Brits with a unique, and possibly tasteless, sense of humor.

Fear and its use do come into it. Governments do like to create a certain amount of fear in their population because it means the said population will be happier to give up their civil liberties in exchange for "safety". It was the mixture of public fear and government's authoritarian tendencies that brought the U.S. public the PATRIOT Act.
Freedom from fear is very important and this defiance shows central government (and anyone else) that people will not be as easily convinced to give up their rights.
