I used to drink coffee compulsively until the age of 11 before switching to tea. :9

10. Diet Coke.

Yes, alas...I am the prototypical ugly American in a handful of ways, and this is one of them. If any of you ever travel throughout Africa and/or the Middle East, and run across either a family that inexplicably prefers Diet Coke to any other common cultural drink, or that owns an Auburn University t-shirt - chances are, Shari was there!

Strong black coffee, not unlike the stuff I'm drinking now

Drink coffee (black w/ one sugar please!) at work and during the day
at home. Like the occasional tea in the afternoon - Earl Grey for
preference - and will also have some of the "variety" teas (darjeeling,
lapsang souchang, spiced chai, vanilla tea, lemon tea) or even green
tea for a change.

Still prefer a camomile in the late evening.

Standard PG Tips is OK when visiting but I've found myself to be getting
so picky about how brewed it gets (again, drinking it black) that I'll
usually opt out these days.

(I have no intention of stating how much tea I drink compared to red
wine, spirits or beer though!)

I prefer Earl Grey to the "ordinary" stuff and also have the occasional
lapsang souchang (smoky), spiced chai (refreshing), vanilla & lemon
ones.

I sometimes have green tea at work if I think my coffee intake has
over-hyped my system and like herbal teas (especially camomile) in
an evening (e.g., when not drinking alcohol 'cos I'm minding the kids).

Drink it at a table outside Blake's or the Theatre Royal cafe in Newcastle and you can admire his column while drinking his tea ... now of how many politicians could you say that ??? :rofl:

20. Earl Grey is lovely stuff.

I'm also partial to Irish Breakfast and Assam, but Earl Grey is my usual. It's also surprisingly good iced rather than hot.

22. Slightly off topic (and possibly silly) question ...

... how do you make iced tea (specifically iced Earl Grey)?

Do you just make a pot/mug/cup full as usual, adding sugar if that is
to your taste, then drop ice cubes in it or do you let it cool first?
If the latter, how do you stop it stewing into a horrible cold tannic
mess?

(Sorry but I've only ever had "iced tea" as a soft drink out of a can
or bottle up to now!)

23. For Earl Grey...

I boil approximately a litre of water (a pot on the stove works better than a teapot for this, really), then take eight teabags and steep for about 5 minutes, add the tea to about 1 litre or so of COLD water in a pitcher (reduces the temperature wonderfully), sweeten to taste, and then pour over ice cubes in a tumbler (it's better if iced by the glass, and the pitcher can be refrigerated).

And you can, of course, adjust the proportions as needed.

24. Typically you make hot tea; then let it cool down

to add ice. And uh, remove the tea leaves/bags.

And the past few years, they have put out special regular tea that can be steeped in cold water. I've made that quite a bit in the summer time. Somewhat atypically, I prefer it w/o a ton of sugar.

I've never tried any of the fancier teas, like Earl Grey, for iced tea, but I'm sure it would be good. :thumbsup:

If tea is the drink of the UK, iced tea is the drink of the American South. :D
