You just can't make this stuff up
A group of teens with Tourette's Syndrome is being shipped off to a summer camp for a new ITV reality series.

The aptly-named Teenage Tourette’s Camp will follow five British kids at the unique camp in Chicago, where they will be "allowed to swear, behave obsessively, act compulsively - and enjoy every minute of it."

The show will air as part of the network's upcoming autumn schedule.

Hm let's laugh at the handicapped :eyes:!
And why do the parents allow this? I could understand such a camp for them but why broadcast it for the entertainment of the public??

2. OMG!!!
Is this true? I would like to believe that it's a bit of black humour about how ridiculous reality shows have become, but unfortunately I think it probably is true!

Why do the parents allow it? Or anyone? If a psychological researcher wanted to ask a group of teenagers with Tourette's syndrome to do a 5-minute written test in privacy, as part of an investigation into the causes of the problem, they would have to submit their research proposal to an ethics committee, and wait for a decision as to whether it was OK. And if the decision was no, then they couldn't do it. But there seems to be virtually NO regulation of these reality shows. Those in charge of the regulation of broadcasting seem more concerned about whether someone says a rude word before 9 p.m. than about the exploitation of human beings!

3. As the father of a child with Aspergers Syndrome,
I'd say that the parents need their fucking heads examined. We wouldn't let our kid be entertainment for the great Sun-reading public to chuckle over.

4. Not long ago we found the idea of people in 18thC Britain ...
... strolling along to Bedlam of a Sunday and having a good laugh at the "lunaticks" a relic from a barbaric past.

Now it seems it's due for a revival. O tempora, o mores.

5. This is surely the return of Brass eye. If not i bet they're gutted
they didn't think of it.

I've got one.
Autistic kids get to fight eachother on telly with the winner getting rid of their ASBO and/or tag ("for behaviour likely to cause distress to normal people")

6. This has to be a spoof
Please tell me it's a spoof. Then again, it's ITV. Even before I gave up TV, I hadn't watched ITV for years.

The evil in me wants to do a gag about what people with Tourette's would say about this, but since I'm not an ITV commissioning editor, I know when to keep potentially offensive ideas to myself.

The camp itself may not be a bad thing: there's nothing inherently wrong with encouraging the non-neurotypical to accept and even celebrate their difference. I'm weird enough myself to see that. But presenting it for public amusement... how long before we have a game show called "Kick the Cripple?".

8. Lowest Common Denominator TV hits a new low
Are ITV actively trying to lose their license? Or as people have implied is Chris Morris now the head of programming for ITV?
