BritFreeper response to Menezes: Arm all British police....
... and it won't happen again.

I kid you not!

http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/sterlingtimes/vpost?id=592480

"Quidnunc" who posted this brilliant suggestion is - guess what - a retired Chicago cop. I guess if we take on board his suggestion, the l'il ol U of K will be as peaceful and crime-free as the good ol' US of A.

I paddle in these waters less since ST gave up being a British "conservative" site and dedicated itself to being a largely American and Israeli "portal" for Islamophobia. But I look in occasionally to have my synesthsia devastated.

Liked the one about Mr. Menezes being responsible for his own death because he was in the country illegally. David Davis are you listening ....?"

Wankers!:argh:

2. It's not just the freepers
There are plenty of Brits who describe themselves as left wing or moderate who think the "shoot to kill" directive reasonable and even humane (one innocent person dying is justified by the possible threat to hundreds) and who believe Mr de Menezes was "the author of his own misfortune". "He shouldn't have been here," as one of my friends said.

This is the power of nightmares - it makes authoritarian and repressive measures possible by poisoning the public mind.

4. I gave up on ST pretty quickly too,
it was ok, when there was proper debate between conservatives & a few liberals. But now it's just boring.

5. Daily Mail
Just read the letters page of the Daily Mail for more of this type of thinking. It's astonishing that these people manage to tie their own shoelaces.

7. It is unfortunate
that those who know nothing about Britain still want to offer us their opinion on how it should be run, no matter how ridiculous. I don't think that "Quidnunc" could point to the UK, or Europe on a map.

8. On LBN or GD
there was a poster laying down the law about Britain, very opinionated, who then asked "where is Luton"? And as regards that Express headline - of course the conspiracy numpties will agree that the police shouldn't face murder charges, because it wasn't them, it was Scotland Yard.

11. In a LBN thread a couple of weeks ago
one poster stated that Britain had a military government. I got a kick out of that one.

Maybe it's controlled by the mysterious "Scotland Yard" organisation? :)

12. No, the best one so far
was the poster who said they were going to cancel their vacation to the UK and stay in the US because London wasn't "safe" anymore.

14. That is a good one
another one is that (this wasn't on DU but linked to), you will recall, that the 7th July explosions were originally suggested to have been as a result of some kind of power surge in a transformer at Liverpool Street. The unfortunate Mr De Menezes was an electrician - and there was a link to a site saying that was why he had to die. Although it wasn't clear to me whether the suggestion was that he arranged the explosions for the miltary junta, or merely discovered the truth.

10. It's actually quite funny
the more people have guns, the less likely people are to get shot. Pity they didn't apply that logic to WMDs eh?

19. I just love 'Quidnunc's logic
All police should be armed, because then they'll be used to their guns, and therefore accidents will be less frequent.

At the moment there are a number of specialist fire-arms officers - they effectively spend their entire careers working with their guns - they are the ones who shot Snr de Menezes.

If we were to arm all police officers (who don't want the damned guns anyway - not that this would bother Quidnunc), it is likely that each officer would touch their weapon (outside of training, of course) maybe once a year at the most.

Therefore (following his line of 'reason') a person who uses his weapon once a year is more safe than one who uses it constantly.

Am I missing something of his argument - or is he totally bonkers?

Clearly a tragedy has occured, and I'm waiting for the outcome of the investigation before commenting further - but I am as certain as I can possibly be, that the U.K. is far safer by having guns in the hands ONLY of police who have that as their specific task, their entire time spent training with these weapons and (by virtue of their smaller number) far more time spent actually using them.

20. I think it's basically a case of the far-right limbering up ...
... to defend the indefensible when the IPCC report is published.

Whatever the outcome, it is not likely to be - pace Quidnunc - the finest hour of the give-the-slops-shooters lobby.
