WA--Gregoire says recount the whole state or don't recount at all

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002107277_webgregoire02.html
"Republicans have been pressuring Gregoire to concede without another recount.

Rossi has declared victory and held a party Tuesday night to celebrate.

Rossi won the first count of the Nov. 2 election by 261 votes. A statewide machine recount of nearly 3 million ballots tightened the gap to 42 votes."

Gregoire says recount the whole state or don't recount at all

By David Postman
Seattle Times chief political reporter

Democrat Christine Gregoire said this morning that if her party doesn't raise the money for a statewide recount, she will concede the governor's race rather than count only a few counties......

5. She's preempting the puke talking point - but partial is better than none
"If a partial recount put Gregoire ahead then the state would pay for a recount in all 39 counties and reimburse Democrats for the initial count.
...
Republicans have been pressuring Gregoire to concede without another recount."

I hope to God we get a full recount.

But only a manual statewide count will verify the system.

I wish politicians understood how important that is right now to the legitimacy of our democratic republic.

11. Didn't Kerry just give $200,000 for the Wa. recount?
How much $$$$ do they need to recount the whole state?

12. $750,000 apparently. Much more that Ohio, strangely. Maybe it's for a full
manual count. In which case, worth it.

13. Counting every ballot is what AG Gregoire has insisted happen,
thus the expense. Justified for many reasons.

Peace.

21. Yes - $750,000 is for recount of whole state-
If you include support, they're thinking it will end up being more like $1.5 million

This is a huge loss and they appear ready to just give it up. We're at the edge of the abyss; what the hell are they holding back for?

Democrats will finance a statewide hand recount, AP reports
Dec 3 - 2:29 pm
By David Ammons
The Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington Democrats, hoping the third time's the charm, will pay for yet another recount in the state's ultra-close governor's race that remains unsettled after more than a month.

The party also is heading to the state Supreme Court to seek a ruling that all ballots be treated the same from county to county.

Top-ranking Democratic sources said the party has raised the necessary $700,000-plus to recount all 2.9 million votes cast for governor on Nov. 2 — not just votes in selected counties. A flood of online contributions put the party over the top, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Party leaders, including the state chairman and the three most recent Democratic governors, scheduled a news conference to announce the development.

The party's nominee, three-term Attorney General Christine Gregoire, had told party leaders she was prepared to give up her quest for the governor's mansion if only a partial recount were ordered. "No games," she said.

The hand count is expected to cost the party over $1 million, including legal costs, and leaders said it was a backbreaking job to raise that kind of money in just a week.
