WA--Statewide recount next week; Reps say recall is "nuclear bomb."

....Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance called the lawsuit "a nuclear bomb. It will blow up our election system in Washington state."

Statewide recount next week;

Dems sue over rejected ballots

Saturday, December 04, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M.

By Andrew Garber and David Postman
Seattle Times staff reporters

ROD MAR / THE SEATTLE TIMES
State Democratic Party Chairman Paul Berendt makes a point during a Seattle news conference yesterday announcing the party would finance a hand recount in the governor's race. At center is Gov. Gary Locke, and at right is former Gov. Booth Gardner.

OLYMPIA — Democrats yesterday plunged Washington into an unprecedented statewide hand recount of nearly 3 million ballots in the governor's race by delivering a $730,000 check to the Secretary of State's Office.
And in a simultaneous move that Republicans called a "nuclear bomb," Democrats filed suit in the state Supreme Court, seeking to compel counties to reconsider ballots that had previously been rejected.

Both moves have the potential to throw the state's elections system, and the race between Republican Dino Rossi and Democrat Christine Gregoire, into more weeks of turmoil......

1. Um... uzzackly how does an accurate count of the ballots...
... threaten an election system?

Maybe Vance meant to say it threatens his party's illicit control of an election system?

Really, I hope most Washington staters have the common sense to realize that if someone is saying "Don't look here! Don't look here!" ... well, you probably ought to look there.

That rhetoric says a great deal about the moral sickness of the gop.

22. A Hand Recounting of Votes Threaten *Republicans'* Idea of the Election
system, and their idea of "democracy", and their idea of how an American government should be realized.

They share the same ideals as Nazi Germany, and Hitler, so why does this surprise anyone??

23. It doesn't - we've got their number. If they were innocent they'd say fine
and laugh: it's your money. But since they aren't innocent they start whining and squealing and ranting and raving and whimpering and moaning and rocking back and forth.
Nuclear bomb, indeed.

27. Yep. We've Got "Their Number", and We're Gettin' Close...
...and the fact that the chairman is using a "fear" word {i.e. nuclear bomb"} just tells me just how scared they're feeling on seeing that not only did Gregoire get the huge sum of money in a few days--which they thought was impossible--but that her campaign was able to raise the down-payment in such a short time!

Grassroots liberals, progressives, and democrats are fired up, and that spells defeat for the RWers, and their fan base.

Thanks to the democratic blogs, and liberals on the Internet (absent any MSM help as usual), I think the Gregoire Campaign is looking at a nice win very, very soon. ;)

The closer we get...the louder they get, and that, dear glitch, is a GOOD sign if we've ever needed one.

5. They are acting like mini versions of Karen Hughes and Fla 2000
I see they have the big electronic billboard up on I-5 that says "Christine Concede." Plus every Repub in the state out in full force trying to stop the process. BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

What is the GOP afraid of? Nucular bomb? Afraid of the fall-out, boys? I personally look forward to the re-count. I think it will give the entire country a chance to spotcheck the numbers that come out of the machines.

Maybe the GOP has info the rest of us don't? They sure are breaking into fits around here.

And thank you DUers and others outside our state for coming to the Democrats aid. I for one will not forget your generosity.

I hear the votes will be counted by Dec. 25th. I know what I want for xmas.

Feeling very optimistic. :)

Rossi's statement that he would not have done this had the situation been reversed...yeah, right..

No one in their right mind would accept a 42 vote difference in any election.

My hopes are high that Christine will prevail.

7. Hysterical Republicans are overreacting once again
"It will blow up our election system in Washington state."

Vance needs to talk to Laura Bush, and find out if he can borrow some of her Xanax. His anxiety is pathological. But then again, he is a Republican and they are extremely emotional creatures.

and world-wide. I made a comment to a friend a few years ago that "it's a good thing they built all these prisons, so they'll have a place to retire."

I really want justice in this matter. If these fraud allegations nationally prove true, as we all believe, I want anyone involved behind bars for the rest of their lives. Stealing the United States of America is a serious crime.

21. Protest idea. Find republicans in Washington. Ask them if they can
make a ten dollar bill from your handful of singles. Only give them 6 singles and odd change.
See if they count it. See if they say anything. Deny the problem. See if they ask for a recount. Tell them you already counted it. See if they ask for yet another recount. Ask them how many times do they need to count it? Tell them they are wasting your time and time is money.

it would be extremely effective as a PAC tv ad to show the public the simple logic of why the recounts are needed. It's a common sense argument that would have immense mass appeal.

29. It's the Old "No, *You're* Stupid" Republican Tactic, and as Always...
...producing no sensible facts to back up his screams, and accusations.

I'd think that Republicans, and all parties alike, would want this election to be legitimate, since most of us know, that according to the Miami Herald, Al Gore did win Florida, and thus the also, the Electoral College in 2000, making B* an illegitimate president at best.

Why are the Republicans fighting any recounts, and their mouthpieces in the media trying to suppress what should be seen as, one of the biggest stories of this century?

Could it be...<gasp>...that they know we're right?

....as ironic as it is.

When those ~ 2.9 million ballots are compared to the current values in the tables in each county's db, it is likely a rather "radioactive" fact will contaminate them and their buddies in the oval office for a very very long time. By comparison, consider 'Watergate' emitted a faint pop and quickly decaying consequence for the 'republican party' compared to what they've done to themselves this time around.

Peace.

40. True and sad, I think...
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 06:12 PM by IndyOp
They are using the overblown "nuclear bomb" verbeage to scare people into accepting their attempts to stop the recount -- and, in fact, it hides their fear of being found out. I pray Watergate will be a quickly decaying consequence compared to what they've done to themselves this time around. I don't want people who haven't done harm hurt by the fallout, but it is high time that people in power who have abused that power fall as hard as is necessary to stop the violence in and outside the country.

Also - an additional thought - at first I really thought that it was the top eschelon of the R party that was 'sick'. I think that a surprising number local R's have been modeling themselves after the crooks who hijacked the party some decades back. I went to a meeting at my local Dem HQ this past week and heard from some of the Dem observers who stayed at the county voting office the night of 11/2 watching the vote count. Some of opscan ballots had faint pink ink marks on the bottom -- an obvious printing mistake. The marks were below the line that marked the end of the area where people marked their votes. The opscan reader would not accept the ballots because of the faint pink mark, so the county clerks used the eraser of a pencil to lighten the flaw so the reader would take each ballot. The R's went berserk and made verbal threats. I am ashamed.
