Elections chief resigns, 4 staff are suspended

snip:

The county, which certified its vote Wednesday, will have to amend its official certification with the state, in part because of an apparent failure of employees to properly do their jobs, board Chairman Bernadette Noe said.

A spokesman for Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell said yesterday that Mr. Blackwell "continues to have grave concerns" about the performance of the county elections office, and said he will soon intercede to make changes.

Here is another article about an incident from neighboring Wood County. Hope it's ok to add it on here, I don't think I can start new posts yet.

Investigation sought in poll data's removal

SNIP:
BOWLING GREEN - Wood County elections officials have asked County Prosecutor Ray Fischer to investigate whether a local Republican broke any laws when he removed a list of registered voters from a polling place Nov. 2.
Ed Sitter, who headed the Bush re-election campaign in Wood County, allegedly took the Middleton Township North precinct list from the Haskins fire hall shortly before 4 p.m. on Election Day.

We heard the call on our police scanner on election day, but never heard anything more about it until it hit the small town paper a couple days ago.(sorry not available online).

The Blade's article doesn't go into it as much as our local small paper did. From our local paper, the man swooped into the polls and scooped up the book without notifying anyone what he was doing. He
came to the polling place in a vehicle from Michigan(although he lives in our area) and was with 2 Republican party officials.

In addition, our local paper, The Sentinel-Tribune states that "Mr. Sitter attended a holiday reception at the White House Wed. evening (12/1) as a thanks for his work on the presidential campaign."

"A republican member of the board of elections, said this morning tha Sitter and the others in the vehicle on election day were volunteers for the Bush-Cheney campaign and not for the local party candidates."

1. Amazing story...here's a kick and a working link...

this certainly was buried...

http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041203/NEWS09/412030389&SearchID=73192057773445

Meanwhile...the front page of the Blade features an article about how happy black republicans were at the turnout by blacks for Bush. They cite only Republicans, and put up the also shenanigan-plagued Lucas County as an example. They also feel fine to cite exit polls to make their case. (Haven't they heard?)

shsssssz.

Wood County officials to discuss election costs

BOWLING GREEN — Wood County elections officials plan to meet with county commissioners next week to talk about the estimated $50,000 in extra expenses the board of elections incurred for the Nov. 2 election.

Director Terry Burton, director of the board of elections, said the bulk of that amount came from the extra workers brought in weeks prior to the election to process new voter registrations.

Mr. Burton said the board also will discuss next year’s budget, which includes a request for $430,000 to pay for touch-screen voting machines.

State and federal grants will pay for some machines, but Wood County feels it will need more of the machines to prevent long waits at the ballot box, he said.

6. You bet...and if you can keep telling us what your local paper....

is saying (since it's the small papers, the beat reporters, who do real footwork, rather then the report-by-phone, go with the flow, of the larger papers and the wires). I think we'd all be grateful.

5. I don't recall this in the letter to Blackwell...

I don't recall this in the letter to Blackwell from the Judiciary Committee. Does anybody know how we could bring it to their attention?

9. In the second article, very interesting comment about them
not verifying voters?

Mike Marsh, a member of the elections board, said the list has little value, especially after 4 p.m. when poll workers no longer check off names of voters. Still, the board agreed the prosecutor should review it.

So, if you want to vote multiple times or using someone's name from the inactive roles, when is the best time to go? After 4 pm.

When was the historic "Red Shift"? After 4 pm.

That seems like the most backward way of verifying. If they were going to vote more than once, then logically they'd do so early in the day then later, reduce the chance that anyone would recognize them and notice that they'd already voted..
