39. Outrageous. I called National Writers Union. kick!kick!kick!
They've helped other jailed writers before by raising a public stink. I don't know if they'll help, but will let you know if I hear back. Delivering a letter to a public official should NOT be a crime!

"A former US congressmen went from the halls of congress to the halls of justice and was jailed in Columbus after attempting to deliver a letter about voting irregularities to Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.
Dan Hamburg was a California congressman in the early 1990s. This week Hamburg and his wife have been part of a group watching the latest developments in the Ohio recount.
Columbus police arrested Hamburg and his wife, Carrie, Wednesday for trespassing after refusing to leave a private downtown building that houses the secretary's office. Hamburg was an elected democrat, then a green and then a libertarian candidate in California.
The political activist and a small group with him said they wanted Blackwell to answer questions about voting problems from the November election.
Blackwell's office says it was private tenants in the building who asked security to call the officers.
Hamburg did not have an appointment with Blackwell and refused to leave a restaurant."

6. Okay...but here's a question....Doesn't Hamburg and wife pay taxes too?
I mean, Blackwell does not own that building. How then, can it be "traspassing"?

22. This is WRONG. We the people ought to have access to the offices
of our public officials. Usually public offices are in public buildings, eg, capitols, state office buildings etc. I have been on the phone trying to get more info on this arrest. Here is what I found, so far:

Blackwell's office is in the Borden (as in glue) Building at
180 East Broad St in downtown Columbus OH. Besides Blackhearts office, other businesses there include:

Fifth Third Bank -(614) 223-3973
TD Waterhouse -(614) 221-5880
BORDEN INC -Emerg Ph: 614-431-6600; toll free 800-848-9400
and...

Zuppa Restaurant -(614) 225-9220 <This is where the people were arrested

I talked to the manager and he told me so, however, it is not clear whether he called the police, or if someone else did. He referred me to Borden Building security -(614)221-6260. I asked the secretary if she could give me info on who called in the complaint, she said I had to talk to Security head, Carl Bokemper. She declined to give me his phone number because I didn't ID myself (didn't think fast enough to give a fake name).

Anyway, I would like to know WHO called in the complaint...and why, specifically.

Blackwell put his offices in their for that reason alone in the first place? To be like the Chimp and flake out and be scared of questions and dissent? Good grief, these fascists make me sick!

8. Santorum tried that ruse with anti-war protestors at a sit in
He said the private tenants in his PA office wanted the college kids out and they called security. Turns out Man-on-Dog Santorum was lying and made the call himself telling his staff to have them arrested if they didn't get out before 5:00PM. One of the students got tipped off and Santorum got caught in yet another lie.

13. Then they fight you, then we win
"Gandhi is known for saying: 'First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.' Well, we are at they point where they are no longer ignoring us, they are no longer laughing at us, THEY are fighting us, and WE WILL WIN!"

18. I love that quote and agree with it, but
Doesn't it assume that the playing field is somewhat equal and fair? As in, the law is equal for both sides? If one side is above the law and the other side is persecuted for just thinking differently, it tends to make 'winning' seem impossible (Just ask the Jews in Nazi Germany). Lately I'm thinking maybe a full-on revolution is the only way to make progress. We'll also need help from the outside.

34. If it's a privately owned restaurant and you are asked to leave
and you don't it's trespassing. Especially if you are not eating. They should have ordered something and sat down and waited. I'm not saying that they were right or wrong, I'm just answering the question.

23. Ironic thing is they were in his Office on Monday
watching the "official" certification. Local Public Radio station here in Cincinnati/Dayton (WMUB) reported briefly on it this morning.

Never mentioned anything about a restaurant though. Did mention Civil Dissobedience -- and I do believe that Dan his wife have been there all week picketing (though this is assumed, not implied in the report -- CASE has been doing picketing all week, though).

24. Since when do you need an appointment to deliver a letter?
"Blackwell's office says it was private tenants in the building who asked security to call the officers"....."Hamburg did not have an appointment with Blackwell and refused to leave a restaurant."

And which "private tenant" called in the complaint? (Or was it really someone in Blackwell's office??). The manager of the restaurant where they were arrested, "Zuppa's", seemed not to have been the one who called (I just spoke with him).

This is really interesting...

Blackwad's website has this statement on it:

"Change Our World" is a reminder to Ohioans that you are empowered to make a difference in our world. By voting, starting a business, running for office or building character, you have the opportunity and civic duty to positively impact your community, state, country and world. A strong democracy requires active citizenship. "Change Our World" challenges you to accept the power and responsibility our Constitution provides, and it affirms the Office of the Secretary of State's commitment to serve you."

WHAT A HYPOCRITE.
