Area activists demand FBI probe
Lowey supports investigation of Election Day fraud

Congresswoman Nita Lowey
by Adam Stone
Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D/Harrison) told North County News Friday she supports a federal investigation into voter fraud surrounding the 2004 presidential election.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is investigating reported voting irregularities on Election Day that some Democrats believe unfairly handed President George W. Bush a second term.

"Almost immediately following the election this year, a group of representatives, most of whom are on the House Judiciary Committee, contacted the GAO to request an investigation into various reports of voting irregularities," Lowey said. "This is an important request and I will watch to ensure that the GAO conducts a thorough investigation of these issues."

"I believe that the right to vote is fundamental to the continued survival of our democracy, and because of that belief I have been working in Congress to ensure that Americans' votes count," she also stated through her spokeswoman, Julie Edwards.

Snip.........................

Brooke Gladstone, co-host of WNYC's weekend On the Media program, which is distributed by National Public Radio, said the mainstream media might be largely ignoring the story because many reporters are relieved that a "long and nasty campaign" is over.

"Moreover, accusations of vote fraud emerged first in the blogs, which mainstream media regard with some suspicion," she stated. "Blogs break important stories, but they're also repositories for rumor, so every charge needs to be checked….That takes a lot of commitment on the part of reporters and editors that (have) been eroded by charges of left-wing bias from the right, lack of outrage from the Democrats, shrinking news holes and budget cuts."

"I strongly believe that demonstrable voter fraud, whether or not it changes the outcome of the election, is a front-page issue," she also stated.

Gladstone said after 9/11 "reporters (have been) afraid to get in front of a story." They prefer, she said, to receive "cover from politicians," and without "Kerry making a fuss," they might fear charges of liberal bias.

Snip......................

North County News has received hundreds of e-mails from activists across the country begging for coverage of the reported voting irregularities that aren't being chronicled in the mainstream press.

"There cannot be a fair recount because the voting machines - many were used in Ohio and were in the only precincts where exit polls were wrong - leave no paper trail and therefore their votes cannot be verified," Dr. Justin Frank, the author of Bush on the Couch, a psychoanalysis of the 43rd president, remarked. "All they do when recounting machine ballots is look at the same printout and add it up again. That is not a recount at all, because it says nothing about possible machine error."

"If there were a paper trail this would not be a problem because the paper trail could be checked against the vote total," he continued. "Since that is not the case, a recount is impossible."

"They must do a revote," Dr. Frank concluded.

1. Any county that does not have a paper trail
must have a revote. That is the only acceptable solution. So what if we don't know whose president for another 3 months. The world will still keep turning.

2. I have brought that very question up on this board.
How can one have a recount if there are no traceable votes to recount?

3. I think that's Bush's problem
because unless we can recount the votes, he can't prove he won.

9. We need to put them of the defensive
Bush can't prove he won, so we should not accept him has the next president.

4. I'm concerned that the recount will be clean.
A recount may not find any significant problems if the original count didn't find them.

Caging lists, distribution of voting machines, poll watchers and other dirty tricks of Blackwell et al. won't show up on a recount.

If no irregularities are proved by the recount then they will say things like "Dems will just keep counting the votes until they get the result they want". And this might be just the logic that the media needs to continue ignoring the problem.

I would really like to see some sign of movement in the court actions and FBI investigations.

10. Fine, just count the votes
I just want to know who really won. Fair and square.

14. That's why it's at least as important...
...to focus on things like the distribution of machines (for which we have hard evidence) as it is to demand recounts. As someone else pointed out, if we can prove a pattern of fraud in the distribution of machines, we will be well positioned to look at other areas.

5. I had emailed Congresswoman Nita Lowey
and today i got this email from her:
I thought there was a letter like this another person posted from another
Congressperson on DU...maybe they sending the same letter?

Dear ******

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns about
the integrity of the recent national election. I appreciate the benefit
of your views on this important issue.

As you know, there have been various reports of strange
results and difficulties had by people trying to cast their vote in the
election. I take each of these reports seriously, and have been
following the developments of various cases that are receiving
scrutiny. I believe that the right to vote is fundamental to the
continued survival of our democracy, and because of that belief I
have been working in Congress to ensure that American's votes
count.

Almost immediately following the election this year, a
group of Representatives, most of whom are on the House
Judiciary Committee, contacted the Government Accountability
Office (GAO) to request an investigation into various reports of
voting irregularities. This is an important request and I will watch
to ensure that the GAO conducts a thorough investigation of these
issues.

In addition, I am already a cosponsor of H.R. 2239, the
Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act. Congress took
the first step towards enhancing our nation's system of voting in
2002 when it passed the Help America Vote Act, which I
cosponsored. While this legislation has facilitated needed
improvements in our voting system, and will continue to
implement additional changes, I recognize that it is only a start.
H.R. 2239 would build on this law by requiring voting systems to
produce a voter-verified paper record suitable for a manual audit
and superior to that of a paper ballot box system. It would also
require the Election Assistance Commission to perform mandatory
and surprise recounts in a sample of jurisdictions to test the
effectiveness of this new system.

This legislation has not received adequate consideration by
the House leadership, and is still pending before the Committee on
House Administration. You can rest assured that I will continue to
support these and other improvements to our election system.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with me; if you
would like more information on this or other issues, or to sign up
for my regular E-Newsletter, visit my website at
http://www.house.gov/lowey. Please do not hesitate to contact me
again if I can help you in any way.

Sincerely,

Nita M. Lowey
Member of Congress

6. Kick because Mr. Stone is keeping up with MSM reporting of this issue
He sent an email to all those who replied to his first article, requesting that any MSM articles be sent to him so he can keep track of what's going on with this issue.

Please write him to thank him and encourage him to keep reporting. He's being a journalist, and they're in short supply.
