An Electoral Warning

To the Editor:

Re "New York's Electoral Mess" (editorial, "Making Votes Count" series, Dec. 8):

Beware, New York, of following Florida. Long lines from early voting with limited polling places and delays in verifying voter registration discouraged new voters from casting their ballots in this state.

Fewer new voting machines and longer lines in New York will mean that segments of the populace will be disenfranchised by available time to stand in line or dedication to do so if time allowed. Long lines will change the character of the vote, and, considering how close some elections have been, this is a socioeconomic issue to consider.
