Shrub covering his footprints w/ this article?
Todays article about an Amish dude refusing to take down his picture of Shrub at his farmers market stand. Democratic city councilman is demanding that a baker remove photos of President Bush from his stand in Lancaster's farmers market, saying the city needs a "healing period" following the bitterly contested election.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=519&e=13&u=/ap/20041211/ap_on_re_us/bush_photo_flap

That's not news! And since when does the AP cover the Amish country?

Now look at this article about the Amish supposedly "tippin the scales" for shrub. "Buggies at polls!"

http://www.vindy.com/basic/news/284804494218860.php

.....but those heavily populated by Amish appear to have higher-than-average numbers.

Lawrence County Bush-Cheney campaign supporters say the Amish helped tip the scales — along with many Democrats voting Republican

It is apparently the first time a Republican presidential candidate has garnered a majority of votes in the county since Richard Nixon was elected president in 1972.

Lawrence County has about 10,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans, county elections officials say.

Bush-Cheney won the county by 410 votes, just about the number of new registered Amish voters that campaign workers say they signed up in both Lawrence and Mercer counties.

I'm callin Bullshit!

2. Hmm, not a 60/40 split for Bush?
"Vessella added that pundits in Harrisburg had Lawrence County pegged for a 60 percent, 40 percent split in favor of Bush-Cheney, but it ended up a much closer race."

Bush won by only 410 votes? Guess Lawrence County isn't so conservative after all. That would be an interesting county to spend some time in.

4. I've been there! I think, I was in Lancaster.
My Mom lives in DE and we go through Amish country on the way to some outlet malls. It's a sight to see. Buggies, etc.

5. The article doesn't say the baker is Amish
but it certainly gives that impression.

The Amish do not decorate with photos or paintings. We know and purchase from Amish merchants, with the exception of sparse advertising material on coolers, the store walls are bare.

bush's warmongering policies run contrary to Amish beliefs and I've always suspected there was no real support for him in those communities. Yeah, it's all bullsh*t.

6. The Republican article had it all wrong.
Amish do not believe in violence and would never support a man who supports war. I lived among the Amish for ten years. Here is a snip about the Amish:

Nonresistance: They reject involvement with the military or warfare. They believe that Amish must never resort to violence or to take up arms in war. However, they do not generally view themselves as pacifists, because this would involve them in political action to promote peace.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/amish3.htm

Their biggest belief is non-involvement in society and there is no way they would vote. They won't use electricity because it would connect them unduly to the English (outside world). Why would anybody think they would vote? Talk about connecting to the English? That would bring people to their door. I don't buy it for a minute.

The article is nothing but a way to justify illegal votes for B*sh.

9. Thanks for info...
before I could ask for it. When I heard in Nov. about the droves of Amish who voted, it just didn't sound right. I wonder if there is anything the rep. party could promise them that would make them change their beliefs.

7. This really bothered me so I did some research
Apparently we have Dixiecrats in Lawrence County PA. Seems they register 55% Democrat and 37% Republican and yet B*sh won with 50% of the vote to Kerry's 49%. I don't buy it. Repugs clearly padded their vote using the Amish Dixiecarts theory to hide it. What a scam. I bet if the Amish knew this was happening they would...well probably wouldn't care.
