With thousands of men and women stationed in Iraq, that's where the
bulk of the American public's attention to overseas affairs is
understandably focused. But as Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa pointed out last
week, events unfolding in Ukraine, once part of the former Soviet
Union, are dramatic and riveting as well.
"They must not be overlooked or their implications misunderstood,"
Leach, a top Republican on the House International Relations
Committee, said Tuesday in remarks before the House.
Ukraine now is heading toward a second presidential election on Dec.
26, after Ukrainians - many of them young - rose up in protest against
the defeat of Viktor Yushchenko, a leader of the political opposition.
The Nov. 21 election between Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor
Yanukovych has been invalidated by the Ukrainian Supreme Court amid
accusations of electoral fraud and the suspected poisoning of
Yushchenko by government officials.
